    Blocked Entrance with dead bees

All hives active, bar one. Imagined they must have died but upon opening loads of bees in the top box but the varroa board was chocca with dead bees. I do check regularly the entrance is clear and remove one or two dead ones but even with looking under the varroa board it’s tricky to see. I...

    Queen Wasp trap

Pretty sure it was a wasp! I’ll try the cider for the traps and for myself tonight!

    Queen Wasp trap

A large queen wasp flew into my kitchen today. Captured it in a jam jar and released it 3 miles away from my home hives. I have one apiary which suffered heavily with wasps last year, so I plan to put a wasp trap out. What’s the best bait to use? Thinking of orange juice & vinegar. Def don’t...

    Pollen substitute-is it worth it?

Any one any views on whether pollen substitute really helps? What’s the point if you are feeding fondant anyway and the bees already have pollen (hard to discern though). Is apipasta or apipasta plus worth the money?

    Removing nadired boxes

Next weekend is set to be 12-14c here in East Yorks. I am planning to remove my nadired boxes, hopefully not too many in the nadired box and not clustered down. Any tips? (11c tomorrow so will heft & check all the fondant levels)

    Varroa boards

I have removed all my varroa boards, despite the cold weather, as I had been leaving them in to reduce draft, but some were developing mould suggesting possible mould inside the hive. Too cold to look.

    Deterring wasps

I suffered a lot of wasps at one particular apiary. Any suggestions for the best bait for catching the early queens. I only want to do this at one site where they were a real nuisance, at my other apiaries I will leave the wasps well alone.

Big boy - He was an egg last spring.

I’m after some Black Copper Maran eggs to incubate, any one know where I can buy from, either internet or collect ( live in East Yorks). Maybe too early & sorry I know it’s a bee forum!

    Gasvap Modifications

I must be missing something....I have an early gasvap (Mark 1 no screw) and find it vapes really well, apart from some slight clogging occasionally due to condensation, which I prevent with preheating and/or remove with a drill bit or the scoop handle. Mine doesn't need any modification. I did...

    Gasvap Modifications

I have found when using the extension pipe to my gasvap the OA often condenses in the tube and blocking it. The reason being the tube is taking a lot longer to get up to temperature, so I use my second burner (I have a spare) to heat just tube itself and that solves the problem most of the time.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Use a stethoscope... it’s much easier!

    Queen Cell Incubator

I use my chicken egg incubator to put in removed queens cells, works well... then put queens into apedias .

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Anyone vaped through the bottom of the hive (either thro entrance or below mesh floor) on double brood and how effective is it? The bottom BB probably empty as the bees have moved up from the nadired box. I’m thinking the OA may condense before reaching the top BB.
