    Omf query

mostly on top of the CB, but there has been a bit of mould on a few of the outer frames too. i've put a different roof on to see if this cures the problem and also realigned the frames in the BB to the "cold" way to see if this will increase airflow and ventilation. I've checked the BB and cant...

    Omf query

thank you! was a bit anxious as one of my hives is showing a fair bit of mould on CB this year, so want to get the ventilation right. think i'll also have a go at propping the CB with matches too, and blocking the bee escape holes over. will also have insulation in the roof above CB, but no...

    Omf query

Please excuse my ignorance, but when overwintering with OMF, am i right in saying that the inspection board below the mesh should be removed to allow for ventilation? cheers

    Savers - Price of sugar

    Instore/Poundstretcher = 79p a kilo

    Overfeeding?

i've been advised previously to feed until the bees stop taking it down. what would you advise as an alternative - check the amount of space in on the frames to ensure there's sufficient space for Q to continue laying into the Autumn? cheers

    Overfeeding?

not sure if you can over fed as i believe when the bees have had enough they simply stop taking the syrup down. i hope my hives dont take anywhere near that quantity as i have 5 14x12 and it would cost a small fortune in sugar!

    Ply Hive?

i've not made any BB or supers out of ply, but this spring i made 5 x 5 frame 14x12 nucs out of 2 8x4 sheets of 12mm shuttering ply, total cost for the 2 sheets £35. They are great for A/S and making increase but i'm not sure if i'd risk them for overwintering.

i added a full 14x12 frame of sealed worker brood on Sunday from a prolific hive, and will top up the syrup tonight then seal the entrance until the weekend. fingers crossed!

sounds good to me - thanks for the tip!

What did you do in the Apiary today?

fed my colonies, had a minor fit and rampaged against robbing wasps, and destroyed a QC; quite worrying.

    Under or Over?

most of my colonies are 14x12 so they have plenty of room on their own, however last year i did overwinter a standard national BB with a super under. no particularly scientific reason, but my theory was that as the weather got colder the Q and cluster would remain in the upper part of the BB...

    Wasps - a pain in the ####

my hives are over 2 apiaries. the site where the problem is has 5 hives on it but they are only targetting the one, clearly weaker hive. at the other apiary i'm afraid i have no more room to accommodate another hive...

    Wasps - a pain in the ####

Hi can anyone advise approx what time of the year wasp numbers start to decline? my guess is that it should be around now as the weather starts to get cooler, however there's no noticable decrease in numbers where i live! i've a smalish colony which i've started feeding, redued the opening with...

    cleaning supers + equipment

I'm still a newbee but last year after extracting i returned the wet supers to the hive but inserted an empty super between it and the brood box - seemed to work. as for leaving the extracting equipment outside for the bees to clean, thats a big no-no, as it can encourage robbing, spread of...

    Too late for a/s

hi Polyhive yes its still expanding and i've taken frames of brood off already and moved them to a smaller nuc. like i say she's laying like mad and i'm hoping that a few new frames of undrawn foundation will give additional work for the colony and more room to lay. i've had a super on the hive...

    Too late for a/s

sorry i should have been bit clearer - i'm talking about the new Q's colony at the moment. She's a May 2011 Q and is still laying like crazy.

    Too late for a/s

hi Susbees are your Welsh blacks also producing swarm/ supercedure cells at this time? many thanks
  19. G

    Too late for a/s

the cells are always at the very bottom of the frame, usually in a central position on the frame bottom. I 've not had any in the central or upper region of the frames which I assumed would have been indication of supercedure cells?

    Too late for a/s

That thought crossed my mind also, but i thought it strange because she's a young 2011 Q and is a prolific layer as far as i have observed.
