    No one could be found!!!

Do you mean that you are leaving an empty frame between each one with foundation? Are you putting any melted wax at the top of the frame and are you leaving in the bottom runner? Is this brood or super? I had been wondering about trying something like this so would be interested to know more...

    Queenless colony

I was able to check my hives with the help of hubby to do the lifting and take the notes (after my heart attack three weeks ago!). One colony that has been very troublesome and has swarmed several times - nothing I could do about it at the time although it had been checked by a colleague. This...

What plants are poison to bee's ?

Most of these sound as though they are not found in the UK - would that be correct? Louise

    Allergy question.

As someone who carries an epipen herself and is allergic to wasp stings and endless other things but so far not bees - I have every sympathy. You know that you should be taking this seriously - have you ever had to use the epipen? It is not a pleasant experience and sometimes only lasts for...

Is it possible to have two swarms (with two queens) close together

I collected masses of bees over three days from the one spot, the last few seemed to have dispersed this morning. The reluctant lot seemed to get over it and had gone into the hive by this morning. So far they have stayed hived but who knows what they will do next - the problem is now I have one...

Another cautionary tale! Always wear your protective gear!

In parts of the body where there are surface veins the sting can be far more painful and create more problems - hope you are feeling better soon. Best Louise

    Allotment

We have an allotment and it is the only livestock allowed - we have considered this and decided that screens/hedges etc are needed around the hive to screen from view and also ensure the bees come in high and down. Good luck and let us know how it goes Louise

Is it possible to have two swarms (with two queens) close together

I noticed a swarm in my privet hedge on Tuesday afternoon- there seemed to be different clumps of bees. Very difficult to remove because of the hedge so cut out as much as possible and hived. A lot more bees than I initially thought. Next day lots more bees at the swarm site in a clump -...

Agree - but the best bit is the weather forecast for the week which is always ten minutes from the end! Louise

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Fredbloggs definitely needs a stress buster or he will be going the way of a heart attack! I collected my first swarm this morning much to the annoyance of husband and daughter because I am not supposed to be doing much at mo because of HA on 16th April. However it was enjoyable and pretty sure...

    Bloody neighbours

Careful that you don't start a proper 'war' but suggest you talk to her sensibly and tell her that she risks been attacked on mass because the bees are not stupid and will know where the attack is coming from. L

Prospective beekeeper - needs kick up backside!

I believe, from others who have out apiaries, that the cost is the provision of a nice few jars of honey when the flow starts, to the owner of the land. The benefits to the farmer with crops is payment in itself! Louise

Prospective beekeeper - needs kick up backside!

As a newbie, I learned for a year, during that year I bought two hives and assembled them ready for the bees - I was of the view that if I changed my mind during that time then I could easily sell the hives once assembled. To decide whether or not your garden is safe with youngsters you would...

    Can't sit in the garden

My two colonies were very feisty last week (someone from the association came over to inspect for me as I have just had a heart attack!). Anyway, it turns out there were swarms in the area so lots of scouter bees, and the guard bees were really aggressive. I heard that the two swarms were...

    Latest beemail and hive theft

I got this yesterday and was delighted to see that someone else has thought of the branding of hives. I bought a kit on amazon a couple of weeks ago to do my hives - but due to being otherwise engaged having a heart attack I have not yet done any designs on my hives but hope to very soon. I...

    Best forage plants

I have not found one and have been looking for more than a year. Don't buy the hooper/Taylor one it is poor. The best I can suggest is that you get the guide to pollen by William Kirk which gives colour codes and month of availability (a little out of date in view of climate change) but it...
