What did you do in the Apiary today?

I inspected my hives yesterday and was planning to split/AS one of them but I couldn't find queen, or any queen cells and while searching noticed that there were very few stores so decided to feed with light 1:1 syrup. A couple of hours later got the email from FERA warning about starving...

How long does a Queenless colony survive?

I had a queenless hive last summer and a weak colony from a swarm, I merged the queenless one withe weak one after first removing all the drone brood and only adding the stores frames to the new hive, I didn't really expect them to get through the winter but they did and after a worrying time in...

    Katie's bees die!

I had just checked mine yesterday and decided that they were in danger of starving because there were very few stores so proceeded to feed them a light syrup when I got the message from FERA about danger of starvation.

    natural poisoning

I regularly visit Wakehurst Place to see the various plants in flower and they also have beehives. I have never seen honey bees on the large rhododendrons, they do use the dwarf ones though. I cannot see that there can be a problem for the bees, they know what they are doing and must avoid...

    Another sting question

Sorry to hear that and here is a very old remedy. Put a large spoon in boiling water and then put the hot spoon on the sting area for as long as is bearable, repeat a few times, it works, must be something to do with the chemistry and the heat. Another remedy is alternate hot and cold compresses.

    Bees and Horses

See Horse and Hound magazine on line for a very distressing incident in Sussex last year (can't remember the month so do a search)

    Chickens

I read something on here last year from someone who had lost several chickens when the bees attacked them. The bees had become agitated because of wasps and followed her away from the apiary and attacked the chickens. Do a search on this site see if you can find it! Louise

    Double brood - National hives

Thank you everyone for you great advice (as usual) I will forget the eke idea and check the beespace, these two brood boxes are from different manufacturers, one is a Thornes and the other from Caddon hives, they are both bottom space and the frames at the top are sitting on runners and flat to...

    Double brood - National hives

My bees were going really well by the end of March and had eight frames of brood but no signs of queen cells or drone brood so I put them onto double brood to provide more space. They have now moved up into the second box with a full frame of brood and drawing out several other frames. However...

    Chalk brood

Hi erica What was the process for introducing a new queen, did you have to kill the old one? My good colony is vigorous and may be raising new queens soon, but I have sent Hivemaker an enquiry about his queens too. Thanks louise

    Chalk brood

I got a nucleus from the local association two years ago and it has always been heavily infested with the chalk brood virus, only just realising that this was a very bad thing to do to a beginner. Of course I didn't realise much at the time being a novice - another colony started last year...

    Bee suit colours

Denim jeans do not protect you from stings, it is better to have two layers, a lighter one over normal trousers. My nitrile gloves are a mid blue and the bees don't bother with then. There appears to be a lot of 'coloured' bee suits around, but most experienced beeks think beige or white are...

    Heart disease and beekeeping.

Hi I am very allergic to wasps but not to bees. Your best bet is to try and get a controlled sting from a bee to see if you are okay with it. The other issue is the medication that you are on, ask your doctor about this. Are you fit enough for the lifting? Do you have someone to share the...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Oxalic treatment I did my oxalic treatment a five days ago, decided that I couldn't wait for it to get colder as it is very mild here in the south east and the forecast is not predicting any cold weather. Had to smoke the bees plenty to get them to move, but the mite drop a few days after was...

Is there any chance of swarming at the moment?

Gosh impressive, how long did it take you to find that one? Louise
