Varroa fall - do they march far ??

As you can see they stick well. Crisp and dry they are now. The pollen mites seem to walk about without any problems (there is one there), but I assume they have evolved that way. And look a poor wasp met its end here too.

Prime swarm and can you name these pollen grains?

Great looking swarm. I bet there is a lot of work to do to get them through winter.

    german bee keeping videos

Cheers Tony, So is the Langstroth depth half way between a standard national and a 14x12. The supers on the langstroth look like the size of a standard nationals frame, is that about right?

Varroa fall - do they march far ??

Also cooking oil on the monitoring board means they don't march anywhere.

    german bee keeping videos

Again thanks Tony for these. It is impressive to see a master bee keeper at work. I think have learned a lot just by the few clips I have watched and will remember more by watching again in the spring. It is also a help now as I am planning out what to so over the winter to ensure a good...

    Hives in gardens

Daveq Yes, block up the entrance and strap it VERY well together and it can be moved. I state VERY due to a close shave when I moved one. I thought it was tightly strapped and it wasn't. I was lucky, none escaped but it was close and scarey. The rule of 3 feet or three miles should be...

    Winter brrrrr

Itma As you have seen there many answers and you will find the one that suits you, possibly by experimenting. For me last year, which was my first year, I followed the advice was given by the posters on the forum I felt I could trust based on what I gleaned over the previous months. To me the...

    Hives in gardens

I have a small garden and at the moment I have two hives and two nucs in it. This is not ideal as far as I am concerned. The nucs are OK as they are small and only building up since mid August and I hope to sell them on early next year if they get through the winter. The hives for most of...

Clustered bees on the front of hive

On warm days some of my colonies cluster outside the hive and things look very busy. This seems to last about 30 minutes. Ely I would suggest you treat at least to confirm your assumption. If you decide not to do an autumn treatment will you be treating with OA in winter?

    Winter brrrrr

I have OMFs. The monitoring board is just that, it is not a floor, it is used only for very short periods of time to monitor varroa drop then it is left out. I put a super at the bottom then the brood box. No top ventilation but I have insulation above crown board. I do modify the middle bit...

condensation on top of the ply crown board.

DerekM, may I ask what were you looking for when you started this thread? Initially it seemed like you wanted a question answered, then it shifted to you stating that you wanted to supply information on the permeability of plywood and then it went to thermal properties of hives and materials...

apiguard treatment...is it too late now?

Julia You must take the super of stores off ASAP otherwise they will be seriously tainted with the thymol.

    Ready, steady........

Dusty Welcome to the forum. There is not much happening with a hive between the end of November and February anyway so I would be patient. If you prepare yourself for the spring, getting frames ready (but don’t put the foundation in). Have a thought on what you will need to do an AS. With...

    honey extraction

Debzbees, Personally I think a useful tip for uncapping is using a hot air gun. There is very little waste and it saves a lot of messing around with using a knife for uncapping then seiving. I have not tried a hair dryer but that may work also.

apiguard treatment...is it too late now?

I started the treatment last week for two hives and the rest were done yesterday. If it relies on bees going out foraging and moving around the hive, well yesterday around 8:30 it was only around 10 degrees and the bees were still out and about. Last year there was plenty of HB and Ivy forage...

Varroa count during Apiguard treatment - any significance?

I am with Alanf as to how I count the mites. I did one hive today and it had 155 on it but that was from Tuesday. The larger colony only had 11 on it since Tuesday. I use cooking oil on the board and put enough on to ensure it is stick enough to hold anything that drops on it and it makes...

    Microsope images of a mite

I am sure it is only red spider mites which scavange on the monitor board when it is in. I don't think they cause any problem to the the bees.
