    First sting of the year

Just want to quote this for emphasis as many Beeks treat between Christmas and New Year which is maybe too late and wont give the most effective treatment. I was planning to treat next weekend, forecast is giving about 8 degrees, would prefer it warmer to have a loose cluster but it will suffice.

6 frame nuc which can be divided into two

I've cut some dividers using 3mm ply; haven't used them much yet but I'm hoping the rigidity will allow them to insert easier although as a general observation for it and the correx; they need to be put in perfectly straight, if any warping of the material and they catch fairly easily. As for...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Cleared space in the Apiary for a container, will be convenient having all my stuff in one place that is dry and secure for the boxes so they wont get damaged with wind etc, Wonder how long its going to be before I need a bigger one as I've ordered more hives from Abelo; so now I need more...

    Experience using Hoffman Converter Clips

I was considering changing over from SN4 to Manley frames, they are wider which means 10 per box.

    Any Aeroplane Buffs Here?

Not a buff but looks like a Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules ?

    Abelo. Another version

Abelo managed to get the correct external dimensions and still hold 11 frames on the original hive and v2. Every iteration seems to be a case of one step forward and two steps back.

    Winter OA Trickling

Have a read of: Convenience or laziness? - The Apiarist Seems to be typically mid December; many treat between Christmas and the new year which would appear to be too late. Pollen gathering or lack of isn't an accurate indication.

    National honey monitoring scheme

They had a table with the number of submissions before, it was broken up into large regions rather than by postcode if anyone can remember where it was posted? It had the peculiarity that the Isle of Man (iirc) was listed as having something like 6 packs sent out but 7 submitted. Point being...

Abelo poly hive, old style v new.

Go for the old style with the deep roof. The only two benefits of the new "shallow" hives is the crown board has been redesigned so now has fewer holes with the option to purchase a small Ashforth feeder that sits nicely within it and the floor has a better tray. I do like prefer the smaller...

    Abelo Flash sale & others

They had plenty of the loose items, I had x7 "hives" in my basket yesterday evening but didn't pull the trigger. I see however the code is still working... might do it yet.

Country file / oil seed rape and Buck wheat .

They have being doing something similar in Egypt for a number of years now using sewage water to grow large forests where there was once dessert. Very interesting project. Egyptian Desert Transformed Into Forest With Recycled Sewage Water

    Abelo Flash sale & others

The new ten percent offer would still apply but I like the versatility of being able to mix and match what parts I need ie extra feeders or brood boxes in which the complete hive discount doesn't apply to. Says it ends tomorrow midnight on the home page banner.

    Abelo Flash sale & others

Abelo doing one of their flash sales for anyone interested as they haven't ran many this year, 10% off (almost) everything with code NHS20. Thornes also doing a more limited sale and 10% off with code NHS10.

    water in Abelo solved

Abelo openly admit on their website that it is indeed water ingress. I have had the new shallow roofs on the same pallet alongside the deep style roofs; the shallow roofs have pools of water whereas the deeps are bone dry. I don't believe it to be condensation. I've never ran a double brood...

    water in Abelo solved

On the advice of a staff member from Abelo I tried the petroleum jelly on the edges at the end of the season but still seemed to be getting water ingress into the brood boxes. They new roofs are badly designed but the new improved crown boards seems to have driven demand for the product hence...

Honeybee Democracy is often well recommended, I have my copy to read yet however.

Moving from standard National deep to 14x12

Easiest way is to work them in over time. Next year transfer the colony to the new 14x12 box and replace the national frames outside the brood nest with new 14x12's ones. A sugar syrup feed would be beneficial to encourage them to draw the new frames At each subsequent inspection take a frame...

    Sales

Sometimes they do 10% off everything, typically around new year which works well as you can buy other bits like spare supers and feeders.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Better late than never but yes well over due. What are you using? Some treatments require higher average daily temperatures than others so may not be suitable.
