    Brood + 1/2

IS a better format than brood and a half .

    Wear White Only

With the amount of hives being stolen at present i would think keeping as low a profile as possible was good idea . I use the buff BBWear one but have camo too .

    Swarm Collecting

If its possible I put a made up hive under and knock it in . Cover and roof on , leave it till dark and foam the entrance and away . Skep if I cant use the hive method . Amazing how quickly they draw wax if you pop them straight into a hive with foundation . Reduces the chance of it...

    16x10 Hives

Only one sure fire way to find out and thats try it . I would suggest sticking with tradition and filling it out with frames though . You will find she will fill most of the brood box quite easily , assuming you have a decent queen . The outer most frames may be used for stores rather than...

Anyone ever use a steel 45gallon drum to boil frames?

No they wont take a 14 x 12 . Well not more than 1 at a time . Go with the cut down drum , washing soda and a fire under it or hire a ring and gas from your local hire shop .

    my first beekeeping bargain??

A cracking deal , well done . Just use the gloves for gardening not beekeeping . G

    Queenless hive

I would read through what you wrote in first post of the thread and rethink . You united a queenless colony with a strong queenright one . You have come out of Winter with one qless hive . Why risk doing the same thing again ? I would be hard nosed about it and let it dwindle , but you could...

    Frame (and other kit) cleaning

Any particular reason for choosing caustic rather than washing soda ? Caustic is very unpleasant stuff , washing soda does a good enough job on frames . G

    Re-using frames

I would use it , its always surprising what they will repair . As mbc says it will also give them much less to do to start storing any nectar coming in . It may be that you have just stored the frames somewhere cold and its gone a bit brittle . It will soften up once in the hive . G

    Is it me?????

Confirm it is you and not the bees . Get your friend to come round and inspect your bees and see how they react to him . G

    Split sugar bags

Beekeepers or local communities ! No one wanted them in the local village , the parish , district and county council told them No ! So they went to their special friend Mr Prescott (well know friend of the shires)and he forced it through . Tescos , I wouldnt darken their door . G

    Great Day

Not the fault of Crufts , its just another dog show . But you can put a lot of the current problems squarely at the door of the Kennel Club . This was a follow up prog to one a couple of years ago and despite plenty of noise from breeders and the KC nothing much has changed . G

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I purchased some 2nd hand hives last Winter from a downsizing bee farmer up nr York . They were a slightly odd size so have been busy tearing them down and shortening them by 10mm . Luckily its an easy enough job as you just follow the dovetail down and coping saw across the bottom . Instant...
