    Bees not thriving

3 frames is a small nuc . Usually 5 would be the minimum sold . There just arent enough bees to really get going , especially this yr with the dire weather we have had . As above , dummy them down to create a smaller space to keep warm . G

    Maintaining brood chambers.

If you are replacing some then its probably better than none at all , so dont beat yourself up . I , like Teemore date mine with the yr they were waxed then update when boiled clean and rewaxed . A sharpie type pen works well . As to how . If its a change just based on age at 3 yrs old they...

    Swarm Q

I have not gone through each reply to this so apologies if its been covered . If you have left bees on a swarm site , you have not done a good job in collecting them . Too many times in the last few yrs i have been called to clear up the problem caused by someone taking the bulk of the swarm...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

JBM . I dont see the problem with waiting a week . We will go back in, knock off any cells , split it down the middle and introduce a queen to each . Hopelessly qless nucs will take whatever they are given . And bl**dy well like it ! :) G

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Helped someone go through the archetypal ' hive from hell' which has caused her problems for some time . Having been stung on the top of her head a dozen times last weekend she bit the bullet and decided to requeen .( i have suggested a hat). I got lucky and found her on the 2nd frame inspected...

Good News About the Weather at Last!!!

Madasafish . Think yourself lucky , I have about 60ha that needs cutting twice a week ! Nightmare yr . Luckily thr forecast is getting more accurate . This morning at 6.30 both the Met Orifice and the Beeb websites said dry day . So far 0.6mm of rain and its still coming down , so, a lot better...

Oops . New carpet time .

The pic was taken last yr . So all suggestions received with thanks but we had to move on from there quickly . I cut the carpet up straight away , it was all the way across the treads so we couldnt access the top end of the house so it had to come up . Thanks to Nellie for the technical help...

    honey

Some coming in , even in the rain . Problem is the bottom super on most hives is empty , too much crap weather and they have eaten it all . Lime almost over too just to cheer me up even more. G

    In need of honey

Clive pm sent . Veg, apologies for not seeing your comment from April earlier . Yes 2010 was correct , I was in no great rush to sell all my honey so it sits in buckets happily enough until I need it .( Or someone else). I still have two buckets from 2009 that I am keeping for home use , its...

Oops . New carpet time .

My Labrador and Teckel nearly tore through me to get to it . Dogs on a sugar rush when the other half got home . The real killer was when I asked the Co op very nicely to cover the cost of the carpet and was told I wasnt covered as it was accidental!!!! Perhaps I should have lied and told them...

Do you cover or leave open your crown board holes

Holes open in Summer , open fully if its a big colony and temps are warm . Piece of glass over in Winter with a 2mm gap . They propolise as needed , it happens rarely though . Empty super on to clean brace comb or to clean wet supers sometimes . Solid floors . May have to rethink if I go omf ...

Brood size options, 14x12 or Commercial?

Although the more expensive approach I would go with a purchased eke . The reason being is if you make your own and you dont have access to WRC it will sit at the bottom of the hive in all weathers and rot out . With a shop bought one it sits under the roof out of the wet . G

Oops . New carpet time .

So here's what happened . Last year I was warming through a bucket for someone else . My honey , but this beekeeper never has enough and I fill in her shortfall . As you can see I get it down from set to half way to full liquid , she collects it and I get paid . 4 steps down the stairs and the...

    Rapeseed??

I get more honey from the Spring sown than Autumn . Could be that the colony is of a decent size by then I suppose ?

    New queens just arrived

Dont put them in the airing cupboard . Too warm and wont last as long . Been there done that . Best place of all is in your shirt top pocket . bit tricky with more than 1 or 2 though . G
