Almost as funny as when he tried to pronounce Sachin Tendulkar !

Best method for small amount of comb honey

As jbm describes it . Go with ultra thin wireless and in supers 2 and above , don’t leave it in any longer then you need to and if its capped take it out . It looks a lot better if you havnt got weeks worth of bees walking all over it and colouring the cappings .

    Crushed Queen in July

If, is the important word there. I was working on the basis that the queen was killed ( maybe) today , still plenty of freshly laid eggs in there ? Also , between frame 2 and 3 the brace comb is because the frames weren’t butted up , from your photo I can see the space and the comb isn’t...

    Crushed Queen in July

There will be emergency cells in a few days if she is dead , keep an eye out later in the week , no need for a test frame just yet . The mess of brace comb is due to the frames not being squeezed up together when you first closed the hive . Tidy it up as best you can and they will sort it out .

Name of a dog we lost some years ago.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Not technically in the apiary but .... Thursday I spent the day trying to inform/educate half a dozen classes from the local primary school in Barnham . Same as last year generally , had a hive with drawn and undrawn frames in . This year the challenge was on though , as the kids had done some...

Bees seemingly attacked whilst returning and leaving the hive

Any chance of a photo , it would narrow it down a bit .

QR - Queen Retainer thingy (Aussie Bill)

If you’re keen Tho*nes sell them for £55 a pop . But I wouldn’t spend too much time thinking about this particular contraption .

    Not sure why

I have had similar in one or two of mine . My best guess was newly emerged drones going walkabout and squeezing through before they had bulked up and been fed .

    Swarm control

May blossom only just starting here ! All of mine well behaved so far but very early days .

    Re-queening nasty-------- hive

If the old colony was as spiteful as you have said I would expect an improvement in behaviour because of your new caged queen , the only ‘however’ I would add to that is whether you now have two colonies in one hive with the super between brood boxes isolating them from each other . Check the...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

A coat of sadolin on a few rooves and a dozen tired looking supers . Made a start on some super frames but snow/sleet and hail drove me indoors . Cold as hell in the wind . Still waiting for sensible temps for first inspection .

    bees in an old tree

I had a call a few years ago now from a greenkeeper at a local golf course who found bees in a felled tree . It was mid January with a covering of snow so all the bees were back in when I arrived . I cut a couple of feet below the entrance hole and got lucky and missed the bottom of the nest ...

Multiple issues - Wax moth, swarm indication...

Sounds like they are dealing with the moth problem so let’s park that for a minute. First job is find the queen , I wouldn’t expect them to swarm/make preparations just yet , is it possible you damaged or killed the queen on your last inspection ? Find her ASAP or decide she is definitely not...

    Pondering pricing

It sounds like a good deal for the buyer , it’s still cheaper than one of the major suppliers who asking more than that for a nuc . That said , if the timber work is unwanted ( guessing it is) then nice to give someone a bargain.

    Timber Croc

Put two tyres one on top of the other and wire them together . This allows you to have a splitting log in the bottom tyre and something to work against .

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Took two recently arrived swarms from my garden and donated them to a chap on the beating line on a local shoot. Not had bees before so this year he has me as mentor . Loaned him the kit for two hives and we will come to an arrangement if he continues next year . Nice docile bees both with...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

School demo. At one of my apiaries at 7 this morning . Pulled a frame of bees and mainly sealed brood to put in a frame cage . 2 frames sealed honey from a super also taken . Set up at local country estate in their parkland along with the woodsman , deer manager and arable farm manager. The...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Up at 4.30am . Moved a swarm collected last May from the garden due to the colony getting a little tetchy . Today I am going through my other apiary with a complete beginner who wants a couple of colonies but has done no theory training apart from a little reading . Throw him in at the deep end...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Just about warm enough yesterday for a look through one apiary. 7 hives . One queen less the other 6 are “ok” . All showed the odd bit of drone brood but I think I am 3 weeks behind where I was last year , and that wasn’t the greatest of Springs either . Nothing in need of supering but put them...
