    Farming Today

Another fascinating piece - this time on disease and the creation of a sanctuary for native black bees in the Scottish isles - this morning. Must remember to listen to them again when I am more awake.

    Farming Today

If the beekeeper who was interviewed on Farming Today this morning is a member of this forum, may I offer him my congratulations. I thought you did an excellent job, in only a couple of minutes, of putting across the concerns regarding disease, pesticides etc, without a hint of drama or...

    Hot tips from experience

It's usually better to take your time and get it right at the first go. And - the cardinal rule for me - if all else fails: think!

    Spring watch is here!

Never thought I'd say this, but :iagree::iagree::iagree::iagree::iagree: Bring back, Humble, King and even Oddie!!

    Queen off on mating flight?

If it was a swarm, then surely it will include a mated Queen? If it was a cast, then it would have a virgin Queen. But I certainly don't know enough about all of this to hazard a guess from your picture which it might have been. (Nor do I know whether a virgin Queen would have set off quite...

IDIOTS' CORNER - Newbee, out and proud!

I have to say I am surprised that there is such strong feeling among 'newbies' about unhelpful replies on this forum. I think it is pretty wonderful. I still consider myself a new beekeeper, since this is just my fourth year - four years is quite long enough to know that you will never, ever...

    Newbie buying a suit-Which type?

:iagree::iagree::iagree: I wear a baseball cap under the hood. This keeps the veil from my nose when the wind blows (little bees have a knack of choosing that precise moment to have a go at stinging!)

    Jacking it in?

Some of us with three or four years experience also have periods of despondency! We, too, have had (and still have) unsuccessful attempts to control swarms etc. So don't lose heart. My recollection is that year two was particularly difficulty because I felt I ought to know it all by...

    Colour of bee suit

Had thought of something in blue serge with some gold braid etc. But the current Lady DD has pointed out that the common or garden white suit does have the advantage that you can see the bees on it.

As it happens, I have. But I would not have mentioned it had you not.:redface::redface:

Malvern, free proper spring water location

I am not sure that spring water is the problem... it will be summer water that we will all be looking for!

    When to mark the Queen

I assume we are talking about the age of the Queen rather than the marker? In my case, the answer would be: whenever you can find the blighter!

    Feeding

Had the briefest of looks at ours today (temperture only 13 degrees - but forecast cooler for the next week). One hive was doing very well, with capped stores and nectar galore. Other didn't look too bad, but not doing quite so well - so they can now enjoy the last of our current supply of...

    Sugar type

The debate on here has been more or less continuous. My mentor told me always to use cane sugar, and I have done so. Other, far more experienced beekeepers than me have said that beet sugar is just as good - they use it without problem. So I guess that, like so many other things in life, you...

    Bee prints

She could always try Microsoft Word's (sorry for the free advertising!) Clip Art. If she doesn't like what she sees, they have a 'search online' option.

    Todays weather and yesterday.

Could I ask why you put newspaper between the supers. I have done that between brood boxes when uniting two hives, but never with supers. Is it just so as not to give them too much space for nectar?
