    Sublimox vs Varrox safety

As with any chemical safety is the key ,even with a mask and all the safety gear on I wouldnt stand in the fumes if they escaped from the hive.I think some do not realise just how dangerous oxalic can be if misused. I remember some years ago getting a whiff of Chlorine gas at work it put me in...

Using Douglas fir as hive boxes

Its heavier than cedar and needs some sort of treatment every year to stop it rotting .Won't last as long as cedar but if you can get it cheap enough and you don't mind the weight why not.

    Sting Proof Bee Suit

One place I always used to get stung is on the wrists where there was sometimes a gap between gloves and suit cuff ,Sleeve protectors sorted the problem. The only time I get stung now is when I have a senior moment and forget to zip the hood up.

Anyone tried or have comments on this..........

It always makes me laugh when I hear people saying they are in the middle of nowhere and swarms are not a problem to others. If you live somewhere like Finny then this is probably the case but in this country its only very remote areas where it could apply and even then I have my doubts.

Country file / oil seed rape and Buck wheat .

    Western Red Cedar

Always used to get mine at Vestern timber in Wootton Basset .I did ask them once where it came from and apparently it was from Pembrokeshire. They let me pick the lengths with the least knots. This was a few years ago things may have changed since then.

    wasp wipe out???

I had the same problem from there being hardly any wasps they just descended on my hives and decimated them bees, brood ,stores there was nothing left just a pile of dead bees on the floor of the hives. All you can do is put it down to experience and try harder next year.

    Wasp woes

I already have JBM's underfloor entrances but even after reducing them to more or less nothing they still finished the hives off, Just the number of wasps that the bees couldn't cope with . I've been beekeeping for a number of years now and have never seen anything like it before I put it down...

    Wasp woes

Worst year I've ever seen for wasps wiped out all my hives even though they were strong, They just couldn't cope with the amount of wasps. I did find one nest when I started digging potatoes about a foot underground and the size of a football. I'm pretty sure there are other nests out in the...

Smoker...should it be used at entrance before inspections?

Always have my smoker lit but rarely use it ,only sometimes if I want to drive the bees down into the hive but only a light puff. One hive I had a few years back would go mad at the slightest bit of smoke I could only inspect it with a water spray they were also very aggressive so once the queen...

    Help, i think they're a bit aggressive

Sorry think you misunderstood me I wasn't trying to slag you off. We were all beginners once. I see you are thinking of moving them near the next door field I've never had any problem with tractors disturbing the hives, I cut right up to the hives with the tractor and mower the worst that's ever...

    Help, i think they're a bit aggressive

I think there are a few problems here. When we first get bees we all want to watch them whenever we can so put the hive in a area that isn't always the best. There may be a good reason that the bees are a bit stroppy they have just lost a lot of their stores and are trying to defend what is...

    Vaping Inspections

Had the bee inspector around last week everything ok but he advised me that they needed treating for varroa. Did second vape today. I'm not sure about whether whilst I'm treating they need inspecting, What do others on the forum do? I'm pretty sure that they are not going to swarm and they have...
