    catching bees

To try and put some context on this for you, there is a big difference between experienced Beeks who collect swarms, and those who perform cut outs. I know plenty of guys to recommend for swarm catching, and none for cut outs! (There is a couple on here that do it, they will help advise I am...

    bees cleaning extractionequipment.

Bad. Encourages robbing, and potentially a vector for disease. Lol, got beaten to it by all the above!!

    combining hives

Just trying to get an understanding though, as the OP explains why they are weak. RAB explains why not to unite at all now, I am curious as to why you would only unite strong colonies with strong. I was on the understanding (of course taking RABS points into consideration) that uniting is an...

    combining hives

Could you elaborate on that Erica? At the moment it reads like 2+2=4 whereas 1+1=1... Not quite sure of what you are trying to say. Surely combining two weak colonies always ends up in a stronger colony?

What is it with all the Fin bashing? A bit of tolerance would be nice! Stop acting like children!

    Poly Nuc Boxes & Wasps

If its the same instructions that came with mine, it states you don't have to paint them, and advises to use a sand mix if you do. But let's be clear here, we aren't talking verbal contract, intent, or implied terms. We are talking UK legislation that applies to every transaction for goods or...

    Varroa board interpretation

Nice one Tom. Cobwebby type 'trails' are from wax moth larvae living on the inspection board. Only likely if you leave the board in and don't clean it regularly. Propolis is often small blobs of dark sticky tar like substance, sometimes looks similar to varroa - but squishy.

    Poly Nuc Boxes & Wasps

Don't settle for defective product. Speak to the supplier, they are normally pretty reasonable, the may agree to an advance replacement as you have evidence of the flaws. Get the advance replacements and prepare them in slow time for swap as necessary. Agree the timeframe for returning the...

    Poly Nuc Boxes & Wasps

Still protected by the sale of goods and services act. Finman has a point if it is just a handful out of 30, it could be defective materials or manufacture, reason for replacement. Companies do have legal recourse if necessary, even if it is not stated in the contract.

Does this sound like a good plan?

Combine 2 and 4? A stronger colony is better at regulating the nest and could improve conditions.

    Reading the comb

If a queen lays 2000 eggs a day (that's a lot! I would expect 1000), and cells are capped from day 9 to 20, then the maximum capped brood at any time is 24000. That's if you only consider the numbers in isolation and ignore brood nest size and number of bees etc. I think there are 3000 cells...

iPhone / iPad apps for beekeeping

Yep, very handy. Thoroughly recommend. Takes about 2 mins to register on you computer, another 10 minutes or so to design your form. After that you are good to go.

iPhone / iPad apps for beekeeping

Forms by Device Magic. It's a free app that allows you to design record forms and fields, then sends that template to a number of devices you define. When you complete the form, it then submits it back via email. I use it for recording my inspections (afterwards and hands clean) on my phone...

Failing colony, no brood, can I just leave it?

Too old? No. Useful? You bet. Old bees are foragers.
