    Slugs and Beehives

Apparently as bees can't evict slugs, they sting them to death and then seal them in propolis to keep the hive hygienic. Clever girls!

    Hazels out.

Point taken, but the tree in question Hazel is monoecious.

    Hazels out.

That's just showing off!!! Is that your photo? Really good shot.

    Hazels out.

Bang on Enrico, and a single tree produces both. Without getting to fluffy and tree huggy - this is a good site: http://www.treesforlife.org.uk/tfl.hazel.html

Moving cluster vs stationary brood nest

They know what they are doing. Your job was to feed before winter. Chill.

    Badgers and Bees.

Nope, keeping a fence powered is too much faff. I will keep looking for a second site. Badgers were there first, fairs fair.

    Hazels out.

There is no such thing as a male or female tree. They are plants not animals!

Solway bees - anyone dealt with them?

I have used them before, no complaints and very happy. Although now I hit the sales and get cedar boxes for a few bob more...

    Badgers and Bees.

Yeah, I know I should give it a miss... It's just the first site near OSR.... :( I will keep looking...

    Badgers and Bees.

Was looking around a potential site for a second apiary today. Nice farm, lots of OSR :) The farmer very kindly walked me round and pointed out sites he had in mind. However site A turned out to be (on further inspection) the centre of a badger set. All subsequent sites had trails running...

    Tree clearance

Chap on you tube cuts out colonies from trees using a chain saw, and doesn't get the response you would expect!! Maybe bees like buzzing chainsaws?!?

To all - a Merry Christmas

On the twelfth day of Christmas my Bee Keeping friends gave to me: 12 hives to overwinter. On the eleventh day of Christmas my Bee Keeping friends gave to me: 11 hives in need of fondant. On the tenth day of Christmas my Bee Keeping friends gave to me: 10 queens a laying. On the ninth day...

    How the bee has changed.

Very interesting. Sounds like a lot of work keeping AM going in Thailand... Interested in the answer to the above - why keep AM over your native honey bee? I understand the Asian Honey Bee can handle both the varroa and the hornets... And probably the heat too! Thanks again for the info.

Hurrah! The Winter Solstice is nigh.

You lot are nuts, the leaves have only hit the floor, we aren't even into the new year yet and you are making out that spring has sprung!! We have at least three months before we even think about lifting the lid off.

    Bees and pigs!

Charred honey glazed rack of ribs, with honey coated pork steaks.... And a beer.

    how to use snelgrove board

Yes, they can decide to raise more cells. Check 4 days after doing this, and knock down any new ones. There won't be any viable stock for queen raising after 4 days of being queen less, so from here on you are good.

    you tube gaget garage

Love that idea of the scales, though I expect they will not be accurate if left loaded all year round...

A good lesson for new Beeks...

I hate being dependant on others, very isolationist :) I anchor strap mine down, nothing short of a stampede of rhinos will knock my hives over!! But it's good to have other Beeks to when you want to, as opposed to need!

    Yellow beeswax.

Agreed, you are after 'medical' grade beeswax. What exactly constitutes medical grade? What is the grade? What grades are there? How are they measured? I would have thought medical grade is man made... Not pulled out of a box of bees from someone's apiary!!! Interested to know what specialist...
