    Another honey fraud article

so do I, and agree with Dodge. But if there’s a lot of stores left, they can be used for nucs. Means it’s worth leaving enough honey on for winter stores - and saves buying sugar! For the last two years I haven’t fed sugar syrup, makes spring a lot easier when I haven’t had to sort out frames...

    Soda crystals

I did have them wondering why I wanted more than one bag….! probably have caused a run on it in that area. There wasn’t much there - and even less when I’d left

    Soda crystals

No, had to visit 5 to find some. Burnham, Highbridge and Weston. Taunton was on my list for Monday, when I’m there. did you leave any?

    So then, mead...

Just reminded to look - no cyber recipes in the book, but why not try mixing a quantity of apple juice with honey instead of other fruit and fermenting it? It can’t be that hard, can it??

    Only in America…..

He could have afforded a solicitor, but decided the hassle wasn’t worth it, and he couldn’t be bothered to argue. I did suggest he sent an invoice for pollination services.

    First Swarm Sweep Stake!

I’d quite like it to be around June 6th, please. I might be ready for it by then.

    Only in America…..

A beekeeping friend gave up his bees for, amongst other reasons, his neighbour accused his bees of emptying his swimming pool of water, removing pollen/nectar from his grape vines and terrifying his children when they once swarmed. This was in Somerset UK. He decided that as he was going to give...

Shook swarms - all bees, every spring

I’m pleased you’ve said this. I tried shook swarm once - never again! I didn’t like it, the bees didn’t like it. I’ve gone back to a Bailey comb change, far easier and gentler on the bees, they move when they want to. I was encouraged to use it by another beekeeper who uses it all the time, she...

    Tincture

I bought a bottle of cheap (then) vodka from Aldi/Lidl and used that. Put the vodka and propolis in a jar, put the lid on and left it on the back of the aga. It took longer than I was prepared to wait, so loosened the lid and put it in the warming oven and shook it when I remembered - it took it...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

We did the same, using slats across the roof to store made frames on makes a lot of sense. Providing you’ve got headroom and don’t have to duck..!

    Beekeeping myths

You mean I shouldn’t pass them on in our beginners course? I thought it was common knowledge…:)

I'll kick this off with Chris's post.

It would save going to the gym!

    Steady Weight

At the moment I know I have 8 fully functioning, healthy hives, and I’m (fairly/very) sure they’re not robbing each other! i know of quite a few other beekeepers around…… so I’m not saying they’re not robbing somewhere else, but I do have some nectar producing flowers around and about.

    Steady Weight

Having given mine a quick check last week, there is nectar coming in as well as pollen, not a huge amount but still promising (I hope!)

    Who makes their own foundation?

I make my own foundation. Started off with a silicon press that Garry R made for me. I then tried some rollers from another BK friend, and decided it worked better for me. I now have a large Bain Marie that I melt the wax in, and a set of large, very heavy rollers that work brilliantly. Although...

    One size box

It’s a Lega Superinox, 9 frame manual. It’s quite big, but I can carry it through doorways quite easily, providing I watch out for the tap and my fingers. Can’t see any numbers on it. I bought it 15/16 years ago.

    Best before and Lot numbers?

I do. Having optimistically ordered A LOT of labels a few years ago, the BBE date has now expired, so I then printed some on a small label and cut them out as I require them and stick them where I rubbed out the old date. It’s time consuming, but I don’t produce that much honey now that I need...
