    Off to the Heather

HM, amazing flow then. I'm just across the Severn at Blaenavon do, hopefully, mine are doing well too. Haven't been able to visit so far, but work in Cardiff on Saturday gives me the opportunity to take more supers. Forecast looking to be continuing ok?

    Buttercup honey?

After more reflection, and recalling bees working in large numbers in oak trees beside a flowering linseed crop, could oak be the source of the dark "chestnutty" or "caramel-y" tasting honey taken off in early to mid July? Also same honey as other neighbouring beeks, and a couple on here e.g...

    Off to the Heather

Good news JB, and looking at the forecast with fingers tightly crossed for all our hives on heather. There's nothing round here in lowland arable Worcestershire for my bees that remain so I'd like to let them join in the fun and games ( and hard work) up on the heather moors. Can I get organised...

    Off to the Heather

Thanks for your observations Swarm, it's helpful to plan dates to move my bees up. Someone said, a few years back, that there was a webcam onto the Sugarloaf. Perhaps if it's still live, I could see for myself!!

    Buttercup honey?

That's interesting because near neighbour-beekepers 2-3 miles from me are also getting the same. Chestnuts? Taste of chestnuts is close to what we thought, possibly described as "caramel-y". ITLD referred to non-yield of blackberry, clover and lime this June and "a bit of honeydew". But from...

    Matchsticks

I heard somewhere that there were four thousand retro holes in Blackburn ; probably still stored in someone's shed. Maybe they'll come up on ebuy one day?..

Beekeeping Tips Please add to these

Removing a super after using a clearer board is easier if, when putting on the clearer board, the Crown board is left on under the clearer board. Just take off the super and the clearer board without disturbing the Crown board underneath. Especially useful if removing supers after dark e.g. at...

Beekeeping Tips Please add to these

And take and plant willow cuttings. I've tried this from a huge pussy willow tree in the next village; it's Salix Caprea, or Goat willow. Cuttings from this spp notoriously hard to propagate from. Any tips to success with its propagation please?

    chalk brood

I was told that in Germany, beekeepers sprinkled table salt (lightly salted!) on the brood frame top bars and that this was thought to stimulate broodnest cleaning generally; chalkbrood was cleaned up.

    Court case abpout OTC

ITLD, your press release is very clear; thank you for posting it. One observation if I may. To be charged in the first place, surely there has to be a reasonable chance of successful prosecution and the case has to be "in the public interest". I can't see how bringing this case meets the public...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Feral colony in a log - update. Carried the log hive a quarter mile out of the wood to the roadside. Nearly killed me as it weighed 35kg! Bees survived though. Topped up the fondant, and will take to a friend's farm nearby tomorrow. Erica - I'll post some pictures.

    Storing Wax Sheets

I put supers made up last year in the car on a warm spring day; that softens old hard wax foundation and saves time with the hairdryer.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I bumped into the forester, who wanted to know what I was doing on private land! After a very civil exchange, he agreed to chainsaw off the log with bees, so I've since added board top and bottom to make watertight , given fondant and returned the log to upright. So all's well for Christmas...

    Anybody know their pollens?

I had a late super of honey, put on in September, taken off in early October, that had enough ivy in the mix to set solid and fine-grained and to have THAT taste and smell. Surprisingly our local BKA microscopist found a dominance of a pollen that wasn't ivy. His books didn't have a picture of...
