    Mouseguards

I never use mouse guards. see Edinburgh Beekeepers association website for floor plans. made these over winter four years ago and since then no problems with mice or wasps. I just amended the plans slightly so that I could slide out the OMF in spring to avoid the need to lift off the brood box...

    Honey Labelling - Origin

Honey is produced in the hive although its ingredients may originate several miles away. Therefore you can name your honey after the village the hive is located in even if the bees do not forage within the boundaries of that village.

Will bees swarm in their first full season?

Don't take the risk and get a second hive. At least a second brood box with frames/foundation so that when the colony does go into swarm mode you have drawn foundation available to do a split or to provide more room for queen to lay. If brood box gets congested you can take out a few frames of...

your hives + hopefully some hive/bee porn

I have langstroth (wooden) on basis that as the majority of beekeepers in this country have nationals and the rest of the world tend to go for Langstroths. The herd instinct in this country is very strong so I instinctively head in the opposite direction and I've not regretted it. I buy...

    Bee Hives on Allotments

I would advise against putting your bee hive on your allotment. I ended up with a queenless hive last year resulting in an aggressive colony with attendant bee stings to fellow allotment holders. Have now moved colony away.

    Snelgrove board

I use Snelgrove Board for swarming. g**gle The many uses for a Snellgrove board for a concise and informative article. if you want to make one there are plans with photos on Edinburgh'sbeekeepers association webbsite. I can even control swarming without finding queen or knocking down any queen...

    Feed your bees

This long period of cold weather will be good for the bees and beekeepers in the long run because it will allow nature to weed out the diseased, weak colonies of bees as well as bad beekeeepers!

How much to charge for honey?

I sell at 4.50 for 12oz jar and don't distinguish between soft set or clear honey.
  18. C

    How much are you charging?

I charge £4.50 per 12oz hexagonal jar. If you can't sell it for this or more you need to change your selling technique.

    How Much is Your Honey?

Honey prices To get back on track the reason why beekeepers don't get a good price for their honey is their failure to market it properly. In particular what always appalls me is the poor labelling and the fact that people still sell honey in 1lb jars. Anyone who buys the ready made labels from...
