What did you do in the Apiary today?

Hefted both hives and listened in for a satisfying hum! Snowed again in West Yorkshire on Saturday.

    disturbing the bees

Mine really dont like my hedge trimmer. They come to investigate and are prepared to sting. I suit up for the 5m either side of the hives!

    Sugar Water

Just finished reading Lansgtroths book and he mentions spraying the bees with sugar water before manipulations. His view was that it is much better than smoke. Do people still do this and is it better than smoke? I have not seen it mentioned in the modern books I have read.

I was at the first meeting of the year with the Wharfedale Beekeepers Association last week and there were no reports of losses at all!!! We are not out of the winter yet though.

    ? Bees with nosema

I am always entranced by sitting and watching them. I almost always see something that I have not seen before too. Whiteish pollen coming into one hive. Bees dragging out the dead and flying off with them. Bees on orientation flights. I thought that this hobby would be fascinating but I had...

Best time of day to move a hive

I had actually thought of that Rab. You are quite right in that if I move the rearward hive it would be on the site of the forward hive. So three moves for the forward hive and then three for the rearward hive. Some of the bees tried to get into the rearward hive but not many.

Best time of day to move a hive

I was thinking of at least a week for the pause. Given that it is only about three moves I could do one move a fortnight and get them in position for the start of April.

Best time of day to move a hive

I am moving hives in advance of setting up a new Apiary on a patch of land between my garden and my neighbour. Both hives need to move about 6 feet. I know about the less than three feet or more than three miles bit. The bees were out flying on Saturday afternoon and I moved one hive about 2...

National Hive Stand with Landing board

Ok I get it. I will just build the hive stands shown on Dave Cushmans site and adapt the open mesh floor to put a landing board on at the front instead of the regular cross piece.

National Hive Stand with Landing board

Does anyone have a plan or sketch of a stand for a National Hive which incorporated a landing board? I am keen to make my own but dont really want to invent it!

    Woodworm

I have discovered woodworm in the rafters of my garage which I am proposing to treat with an insecticide. My workshop is set up in the garage and it is where I assemble all of my beekeeping hives and frames. I will obviously have to move all of my beekeeping equipment out of the garage for a...

1 luxury allowed in your bee box, what?

Reading glasses. So much easier to see what is going on. Again an age thing.

    On the lighter side

Well worth the watch and comic genius at its best. I liked the terrorise the children bit! It is great to see this guy who is clearly passionate about his job.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Both hives out flying today. I had forgotten just how much I enjoy just sitting and watching the goings on. One hive busy bringing out it's dead. I actually saw one bee fly off with a corpse rather than dump it on the front step. I checked the fondant on the one hive that I thought was...

    hello

I am sure that others will say the same but enroll on a basic beekeeping course with your local association. It is a great way to get answers to all of the questions that you have. The most important part was the practical lessons where we opened hives, lifted out frames, saw smokers being...

    Equipment Records

On the picture is worth a thousand words principle. Mouseguard Magnet at a cost of £1.56 from a popular source in Wragby.

    Equipment Records

When I was in Claro bees buying the mouseguards they sold me a nifty little wooden handled magnet that holds a drawing pin. This allows you to hold the mouseguard and drawing pin in place easily without dropping the pin in the grass. I fell for the "hard sell" and have to say it works well and...
