Do you try and convince farmers to sow a particular crop?

I do if it’s that time of year when we have a big dearth looming Typically after the chestnut and bramble has finished in early July, if farmers are able to, and we get rain they sow mustard or Phacelia! My local farmer sown mustard out of preference as it’s cheaper and obviously beekeepers...

Winter ventilation for a solid-floor hive?

Your cold is severe Finman, ours here and most of the uk is different. We dont get cold and dry. Mostly cold and Damp. Thats the difference. Your certainly not wrong, but i would say the climate heres is different. For most here and the uk its cold and wet that kills if your hives aren't set...

Winter ventilation for a solid-floor hive?

All you have to do is put a couple of small blocks of wood to the rear of the hive. Raise the rear up a little. Any humidity on the floor runs out, and any humidity above the cluster runs away to the wall before It drips on to the Bees! Remember it’s not cold that kills bees, it’s cold and wet...

Asian hornets in the UK. A chance of stopping them?

Thats the whole point of the above picture. The Fipronil is mixed in to a thick custard, and painted on to the hard thorax of the Asian Hornet. This thick custard holds its shape and allows you to pile it up, then the thorax is a clear barrier between the poison and the Hornet, so it dosent kill...

    OA dribble

Me too, very good point, why its only a winter broodless option, if there isn't any brood that is, there is always a tiny bit!

    Queen rearing in Brittany

Yes of course, normal swarm control methods. Whatever you use. These were far from closed, by a coule of days, and its always a risk when queen rearing. technically that reining queen could go at any time, but more often than not, when the cells are closed, or at least 1 is. occasionally you...

What fee for an apiary site?

For me, before i put hive to ground, i clearly offer 4 kilos a year spring honey, 4 kilos a year summer, total 8 kilos of honey a year, for up to 20 hives in same apiary, regardless of whether i have a good harvest or not. I feel thats completely fair. all they have to do is look at them, you...

Completely agree with you, were dealing with an invasive species, other insects shouldn't suffer as a consequence.

BBKA news article on Asian Hornet

Your all right, what i was proposing to Mark was that if we carry on with the method Mark has perfected, but instead of poisoning the hornet and releasing, which as Mark says, has to be specific, i was proposing we glue a small disc on to the thorax of the Hornet. (which is considerable larger...

Mouse Guards-when to put on or not bother?

Mine go on as soon as the summer harvest is finished. We make summer splits starting a week or so after the harvest (early August). Part of the process is putting on the mouse guards on when the split is complete. in my mind its a good tool. In a colony thats just lost may be a third to a...

    lizards

My apiaries have lots lizzards scurrying around all the time, their lovely creatures, occasionally find one in a nuc. (empty nuc) sure they do eat bees, also ants that climb up and make nests under the roof cover must surely be attractive too! Last year i had a permanent pair in a swarm trap, i...
