What did you do in the Apiary today?

Would the Tom Seeley method of bee hunting work for finding wasps nests or are the wasps too haphazard in their foraging for it to work? Method shown and explained in this YouTube video.

    days of yore

An interesting little titbit from a newsletter I get was suggesting that as we live in a capitalist society, we can't fault the power producers when they sell their power to the highest payers, and the highest payers at the moment are France and Germany whose 'misguided' green policies have seen...

    RSPCA & Bees

As the RSPCA have a reputation for being 'woke' we need to be careful as their involvement might well be steered by the vegan view on bees and beekeepers. This view would appear to be that we 'exploit' our bees for commercial gain. Whereas the bees they are seeing are the ones used to pollinate...

    Honey Jar Labels ???

As a tip, every time I made a new label for a different batch of honey, I named the saved file with the batch number, weight and the date. That way your file list is then a record of the batch numbers you've used which is an essential (and maybe oft overlooked?) part of the batch number system.

Honey extraction without spinner, preserving comb?

Loads of information about feeding your bees in the Welsh Beekeepers Association's booklet series. https://wbka.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Feeding-Bees-Wally-Shaw-09-2020.pdf

Cost of sugar or fondant 2022

Your local 'cash and carry' might do you better bulk deals than the supermarkets. They might also stock fondant or sugar paste (read the ingredients before you buy though). Bako is the brand we know over here. My local Association in West Wales always used to get bags of sugar from their...

    Honey label petition

My association sent the petition to members and one went to the extent of emailing their MP. Amongst all the usual platitudes of a 'standard' MP's reply there was this link: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/gc-team-publishes-scientific-papers-on-honey-authentication Interesting but I'm not...

    fera booklet

In our neck of the woods the regional bee inspector sets them up then contacts the local associations in an area, one association will then host the workshop and invite the other local associations to come along to the day. So it might be worth contacting your bee inspector to see if they know...

Ideal wasp trap or vespid torture?

They'd probably seen your backhand before and knew to avoid it (either that or it was the wasp buzzing equivalent of peeing themselves laughing at your backhand) take your pick :)

    Honey label petition

The key then isn't a petition to the government, the key is as it has always been, marketing and publicity. Telling the general public about how beekeepers in this country care for their bees, how their welfare comes first, the honey harvested is a surplus, not every last drop as may be the...

    Tree and shrubs

Ah well, it was just a cunning plan really. Ask for a whole list of good things with one that may be a step too far, then you should get a reply along the lines of "oh no we can't do the brambles, but the rest are okay" that way you've got 90% of what you want.

    Tree and shrubs

You could also try to persuade them that the underbrush should be left to it's own devices as much as possible. So more wildflower meadow, or natural woodland clearings and glades rather than neat tended monoculture grass, leave the brambles to grow, etc.

    Can anyone identify this “bee”?

A bit of a rummage on the internet gives this webpage: https://www.nhbs.com/blog/the-nhbs-guide-to-uk-hoverflies-part-2 The page suggests that there are two types your photo could be Leucozona lucorum & Cheilosia illustrata the distinguishing features can't be seen in your photo so up to you...

    Hive stand

For years my first hive was on an old plastic milk crate, it then had a 1.5cm thick plastic honey comb sheet between it and the solid floor of the hive.

Where do you get 8mm strips of wood?

You can get ply wood in 4, 5 or 6 mm thickness, cut a 1 to 1.5 cm wide strip of that and stick either side of the crown board around the edges. A timber merchant can do you a sheet which should last for ages or the chain stores (Wickes, B&Q Etc) will sell you half sheets that are a bit more...

Anyone bringing shade to their bees for the forecast heat wave?

There was a TV programme on a few years ago where the temps in the hive was monitored and it was a constant 31deg centigrade so the bees are going to be quite happy with the current temps and look on the bright side, the less honey the bees use to keep their home warm the more there is to harvest.

    Wasps
