    Lost colony

Hi poot, i have to start agsin unfortunately. It was the most depressing visit to the apiary today. I could of wept. So much pollen , so much honey, so much work done by my bees. I thought with the mite checks throughout summer being low, strips on after the honey harvest, and a trickle last mid...

    Lost colony

Hi all, as already stated i treated with apitraz for first time, as was unable to get any apiguard, which i normally use in previous years. I did sugar rolls each visit through summer( less than normal) which had small mite numbers.. Can i ask, Where did all the bees go in two of my hives. Two...

    Lost colony

This is hive 2. There was zero capped brood. No bees, no obvious sign of varroa eggs from what i could see. Some frames had a rainbow of mouldy pollen but not much else to go on. Note: this hive is nearly identical to hive i lost originally at start of this thread before the the update.

    Lost colony

Hi all. Ok i will post 2 seperate posts concerning the autopsy of both hives. I found different scenarios in them. So hive 1. These are from this hive, clearly i can see evidence of varroa in deformed wings and on the toothpic, scrappings of what looked like eggs from inside a cell..thisi s the...

    Lost colony

An update: i went in to do my usual drizzle fot varroa today and realized both my other hives have been lost the same way. I now csnt brlieve i lost 3 hives from a failed queens. So my next immediate thought is infection, virus or bacteria. I had a look through both remaining dead hives and...

    Lost colony

Thanks for all your thoughts. I was just surprised to find literally no bees, not one dead or alive. I suspect theyve gone into another hive next to them in desperation, as it seemed very full from peaking in the two holes in crown board. So Ive given this hive extra fondant and will keep my...

    Lost colony

Hi all, i went to pop some fondant on today to my hives. One was completely empty of bees. I had given them a last syrup feed at beginning of oct, they had been treated for varroa snd were all tucked up for winter with plenty of stores bias and queen seen. Today i realized quickly as i put...

    Confused by an extra queen

    Give bees more room

Ive a very busy hive on 9 full frames of brood in a double set up. Even with a brood area this size i wont give them more room as their brood will be decreasing in size allowing them toinfill with honey. One hive is already doing this nicely. Im going to try and attach a photo of what theyve...

    Storing drawn empty comb

Thanks all, ive popped them into the chest freezer wrapped and will store them in our shed after, on a piece of board top and bottom then secured with straps. Ive never managed to have 10 pristine empty brood frames ready for easing congestion next year so want to get it right. No swarms this...

    Storing drawn empty comb

Hi all, i was wondering if i took my empty drawn fames (10 empty brood frames, and 6 supers) and wrapped and wrapped them entirely in cling film directly after coming of the hive and brought inside, then stacked and stored in our spare room will that be enough against wax moth? Cheers for your...

    When to replace a Queen

Anyone getting into beekeeping and thinking these prices are expensive, needs to learn more about beekeeping. Good equipment is not cheap and lets face it to do it well you need lots of spares for all eventualities.

    United Buckfast Nuc With Swarm

    Weak colony

I just had the same situation in one of my hives. I gave her 2 inspections grace to get going but she never did. I pinched her out and introduced a q from an artificial swarm which has been a great success. Get some new genetics into that hive i reckon, either by a frame of eggs from a strong...
