    Managing expectations

Mostly farmland around but also captures a couple of villages and small woodland in the 2mile radius. Hopefully that will be interesting enough.

Thank you all, I'd be happy with 3-5lbs.. Fingers crossed it goes to plan. Cheers

    Managing expectations

Hi all, Would it be overly ambitious to think I could get a crop of honey and a bonus colony (from swarm mgmt) in my first year? Not looking for bucket loads, just a jar or three. Total beginner here and I hopefully successfully just overwintered first hive... at least so far... Cheers

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Noticed a lot of white cappings under the hive today for the 1st time in a while. Hive resting on very dark footings so can really see the brighter colored debris. Been consistently brood cappings mostly I’ve noticed under the floor, but today a thick dusting of white (stores I guess) cappings.🤔...

What's flowering as forage in your area

Been peeking through the clear crown board and they are definitely there/moving about...

What's flowering as forage in your area

Should I be concerned that there are no flights from my hives? Seems a lot of people reporting foraging activity already !

    Out apiaries

Just on the being-prepared-on-site theme, would it be wise to have/leave prepared frames (with foundation) in kit boxes at apiaries or would the temperature changes make it a bad idea?

    Poly painting

    Thank you.

    Poly painting

Hi all, At the risk of rehashing what might already have been gone over, and apologies if this is the case, but I still cant figure out if it is advisable to paint the inside of poly feeders (nus or otherwise), and should it be done with something specific? Or can the exterior masonary paint...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Had a peek under roof to check on them. Seem to be doing ok with a decent spread over the frames and spied what looks like a lot of capped stores on a couple of the unobscured frames. Hefting hasn’t worked for me. First winter and first hive so hoping that’s enough to get them through.🤞🏼

    Nucs

:oops::oops::oops: Nothing like a good sampling of opinion! Thank you all - got some pro's and con's to weigh up. Much appreciated.

    Nucs

Hi all, Hopefully this is a non-contentious question. Coming into 1st proper season and am looking to add a nuc (poly or otherwise) to my kit collection ahead of the season. Which make would you recommend, taking into account I quite like the idea of clear crown boards with the ability to feed...

    Double brood working vs Demaree

Prob a silly question but I see you have wbc hives. how do you create/allow for a 2nd entrance for the upper brood box?

On the topic of equipment, does anyone have an opinion on using the Manipulation Cloths? As seen in Thornes product list --> Manipulation Cloth

    High mite count

Just on the mite count.. Is it likely that it can be zero ? Especially when using vape or Apivar strips ? Or could that just be bad eyesight ?

    Bees not taking down invertbee

I had the rapid feeder in a cobbled together insulation - around it and on top as I imagined they wouldn't want to head into a cold environment....
