    Extractor Cleaning

That’s not a bad idea My extractor is new but The plastic cage in particular had a lot of residue/dirt and I couldn’t be extracting honey without a good clean up first. The shower idea I think I’ll try, so I will.

    Extractor Cleaning

I bought a plastic extractor (I couldn’t justify spending 500+ at this stage)... tried to take it apart to clean but it’s wasnt having any of it. I cleaned it as best I could the way it was, with a damp cloth, but maybe the power washer is the way to go. I just hope the power isn’t too strong...

    Clipped Queens and Swarming

Yes that was my thinking on it.

    Clipped Queens and Swarming

I’m not sure I follow. If the Queen perished outside the hive, why would the bees still swarm without a Queen? ............. I understand that the Queen will attempt to swarm even if clipped. But at least by clipping her, you prevent half your hive leaving (as they’ll likely go back inside...

    Clipped Queens and Swarming

I see. And what would usually happen to the queen then? ........ Would they eventually abandon her on the ground? Would she get back inside? Or would the colony allow her back in?

    Clipped Queens and Swarming

Hypothetical question here. If a clipped Queen tries to swarm, how far would she (and the swarm) get? I had assumed she would fall out the front door , and the bees hang around outside the hive for a while before going back inside. Yes? No?

    Apiguard treatment

So you can take a super off, treat hive with apiguard, then put it back on? Any tips on storing? Would the super frames be ok during storage even if the stores aren’t sealed?

    First sting

Severity of stings vary. Mostly I get stung on the fingers/hands (I wear gloves). Sometimes straightaway the sting isn’t too sore, but they can be the ones that give you a lot of swelling or itching later. Then you get the “AOOWWW!” stings, but they can fade quickly and don’t give bother...

    First sting

Yeah, done that before! I took a gulp of it, felt it in my mouth and spat it out. Luckily didn’t get stung I’ve always been weary of using cans since then.

They had a bit of chalk Brood but as they built up, that has been mostly eradicated

4 weeks later, super still untouched

She was a 2021 Queen. She overwintered in a nuc. They weren’t a huge colony in spring, but they built up very well the last few months. No swarms. Queen laying really well.

4 weeks later, super still untouched

    Similar to 4 weeks ago.

4 weeks later, super still untouched

One of my hives (single Brood box) was almost full, with 8 or 9 frames full of Brood. Queen was laying brilliantly, so I put on a super. 4 weeks later, and the super hasn’t been touched. No foundation being drawn, nothing. They aren’t making Queen cells, so they’re obviously not running out of...

    Linseed Oil for treating Hives?

I know Linseed Oil is used for treating hurls and cricket bats. Just wondered if it would be good enough to treat Hives (cedar) ... and hive stands ? I have new Brood boxes, supers, and some hive stands that I’ve made, ready to be treated for the first time.

    Vevor extractors

Ten minutes? Where did it say that?

    Vevor extractors

I was thinking of this one from Thorne’s. Unimel 3 frame manual £200 Anyone had any experience of it? https://www.thorne.co.uk/processing/extraction/extractors/budget-extractors/unimel-tangential-3-frame-manual-s-s-extractor.html

Cleaning extracted suppers in the hive.

When wet supers are returned to the hive after harvesting, should they be taken off again after the bees clean them? Or will they start filling them again? Also, what’s the advice on storage of wet supers? Should they be sealed, eg. Inside a bin bag? I’m assuming if you just left them in the...
