    Hagens Bees

What are they called now? And would you recommend them?

    Hagens Bees

Was Simon the beekeeper taken over by another company? I used to buy a lot of stuff from them on eBay.

Uniting a colony with high varroa drop with another?

Yeah that’s what I was thinking. Temperatures were 15+ early days, and most days, of Apiguard treatment. Only a few days recently where it’s dropped a degree or two below that. Mite drop has remained fairly high throughout treatment.

Uniting a colony with high varroa drop with another?

Single Brood colony, numbers and stores aren’t brilliant. Was thinking of uniting with another colony. However, varroa drop has been quite high recently (30-40 daily). Also have noticed a few bees with Deformed Wing, so varroa are affecting things. Other colonies varroa count has been low (the...

Weak Stores in Brood Box, Strong Super on top

I wasn’t sure extracting frames with some unsealed honey was the way to go? They should survive the winter on syrup? (and whatever they bring in before winter, obviously)

Weak Stores in Brood Box, Strong Super on top

OK, so here’s how one of my hives looks..... SUPER - most frames are about 75% sealed stores, 25% unsealed. BROOD - 5/6 frames with Eggs/Brood, but very little stores in those frames, and in the outside frames. I need to treat with Apiguard, but want to remove the super first (think I’ll...

    Getting old

Inspecting is becoming more painful for me this year. My back (and side ribs) are sore during and after inspections. I try not to take painkillers, so just try a few stretches or a hot water bottle when I get back home. Been getting a few massages in the last few months, but most inspections...

    At the entrance

So, I think I realised the problem. This hive is sat on a stand I built, and I added a landing board maybe 1.5-2 inches width. I think a number of bees have crawled under the board and under, rather than up and in the entrance. I brushed the bees out from under the OMF, and boarded up the...

    At the entrance

    Thanks. I’ll do that.

    At the entrance

I checked my hives on Wed, and there was a cluster under the open mesh floor of one. This hive is double Brood with a lot of flying bees, so didn’t really pass any remarks. Was in the apiary again this evening... Is this many congregating under the floor normal? Especially in the evening...

    Bees swarm and return daily

A similar thing happened to me on Tuesday. About 150-200 bees were clinging to a post in front of hives. Thought it was a swarm (albeit, a small one), so brushed them into a box and left them while I did inspections. A few more bees kept flying to the post, while the brushed bees remained in...

    Complete dead out !

Yes, it was quite low for that colony.

    Complete dead out !

Would have to check my records but I put Apiguard on around Aug/Sept.

    Complete dead out !

I double checked. Treatment was around 29/30 December.

    Complete dead out !

They had stores and fondant on crown board.

    Complete dead out !

Lost a colony today. When treating them with apibioxal early January, I noticed numbers seemed low, so I assume it was a heat issue, lack of numbers. Didn’t have time to get a proper look though. Was there anything I could have done to save them in early January? Uniting them with another...

    Varroa count after OA treatment

Approx 250 mites after 3 days in one colony. No mites in another. It’s mad, Ted.

Oxalic Acid treatment & removing the Super

In order to move the stores up into the Brood Box above it?

Oxalic Acid treatment & removing the Super

Fondant was temporary, until I put the super back on. The bees will probably end up with the honey that’s there (it does still feel quite full), but I was just concerned in case I was to use the same frames in future, and didn’t know if extracting honey from frames that were treated with OA was...
