Supers from hive with CBPV ?

Ok thanks for the replies. I feel happier about re-using the extracted frames/comb now. FWIW I had a bumper OSR honey harvest but now nothing is coming in and the bees are consuming their "winter" stores already.

Supers from hive with CBPV ?

I had 4 supers on a double brood colony that decided to swarm and did a nuc AS. Shortly after that they developed CBPV whilst going through the re-queening process. I removed all supers (full of OSR honey) and extracted the honey. Their first attempt to re-queen failed. I gave a test frame from...

Requeening a very grumpy WBC colony.

When Ive moved my WBC hives, Ive removed the roof and lifts to reduce the weight and then strapped the boxes down to the base using a ratchet strap. Then put them on sack trolley that converts to a 3 wheel flat bed. I made a plywood floor that the hive base stands on . It had 2cm-ish sides to...

What to do with frames with crystallized honey

I would melt it down using my steamer when Ive got enough frames to make it worthwhile.

    Oxalic acid vap

How much OA do people use when vaping a 6 frame poly nuc ? - (a small swarm recently collected). I was thinking half usual dose; around 1g

Piles of dead bees under hives

You will get a range of opinions as hard scientific evidence as how to best manage cbpv is absent as far as I can see. My opinion; if its really bad and not showing signs of improving consider euthanising sooner rather than later -otherwise you waste a lot of time and effort and still end up...

Piles of dead bees under hives

I considered that too. I used it once and the ants are still there. Its definitely CBPV and has been going on for weeks.

Piles of dead bees under hives

Ive had EFB in the past and frankly I find CBPV harder to deal with, both emotionally and time spent.

Piles of dead bees under hives

Yes, I had considered that as we seem to have lots more ants than usual this year. Seem resistant to the ant powder I sprinkled around the hive legs as well ! Even found ants with eggs on upper surface of the crown board in one hive.

Piles of dead bees under hives

I 'm informed that there is anecdotal evidence to suggest the soil/grass around an infected hive can become a reservoir of re-infection from CBPV. I suppose possibly due to the thousands of dead bees littering the ground. Ive had a completely new colony and clean hive infected with CBPV this...

    Advice for pricing please.

My local commercial beekeeper in North Warwickshire sells 8oz/227g for £6.

    Areboss honey extractor.

Looks very similar to most tangential extractors in this price range. The mechanism does look more substantial than the one I bought from Simon the Beekeeper 6 years ago. One thing I found is that these are made in China and cater for a global market that uses mainly Langstroth frames. The...

Nucleus Method - not in BBKA book

Agreed its given a brief mention under "Method 2". No wonder I couldnt find it. Nor is it in the index.

Nucleus Method - not in BBKA book

That's a different lecture to the one I went to. I went to "Swarming, Prevention and Control " by Jim Vivian -Griffiths and I was questioning as to why the Nucleus method was not in the BBKA book of beekeeping.

Nucleus Method - not in BBKA book

I went to the BBKA Spring Convention yesterday, for the first time, and attended an interesting lecture on swarm prevention and control. The speaker extolled the virtues of using the Nucleus method and said it is now the only method of swarm control that they use in their apiaries. Its the...

HOW TO: Make soft set honey from OSR

FWIW Ive never really needed a "seed" honey to get my OSR honey to form a lovely smooth paste. Im surrounded by OSR fields and this year its flowering earlier than ever. Over the few years Ive been beekeeping Ive found this works for me. After extracting and coarse filtering , I let it set in...

Sulphur Discs from Thornes ? needed?

This winter I froze all my boxes to be stored for 24-48hrs. (I recovered a small discarded chest freezer from a ditch - it can take 3 supers at a time). Stacked the boxes and ran packaging tape around the joints (to "seal" any gap) and then put a dish of 80% acetic acid inside an empty super...
