    Rookie error - queenless hive

Hi Emyr - what's a possible scenario that they build QCs on the test frame but there is still a queen present?

    Double brood swarm signal?

What would be the estimated behaviour now I if I were to tear down all QCs and introduce a new mated queen in a cage? Or easier still (for me in this situation) a queen right NUC by newspaper? I could check again in a 5 or 6 days and see if they have accepted the queen AND the QC build situation?

    And so it begins

This is useful. I have noticed fragility about young queens that have resulted in some "Ach Scheisse!" moments. What sort of age, as a general rule, would you advise the let the queen get to before she is considered "more robust"? QUOTE from masterBK: Have to disagree with "Swarm". Beginner...

    Double brood swarm signal?

Inspection of good strong (though not bursting) DB hive showed charged QC but jelly seemed old, grey, as though they had given up. I marched on inspecting and then found just a single sealed QC hidden away, not very large. Clipped green queen was there so I popped in a NUC (better safe than...

    After a Unite....

Cheers Ian, the knowledge I was looking for. FYI - I tried air freshener unite on this same hive and failed. So my personal approach will be from now on: Q+ in NUC to Q- Hive = Newspaper Q- NUC to Q = Glade Q- Hive to Q+ Hive = Glade Sent from my SM-G986B using Tapatalk

    After a Unite....

Introduced NUC with Queen to queenless Single brood via newspaper 2 days ago... Checked today..... 1. The queen was OK but her entire paint markings had been rubbed off. Could tell she was the same as my wing clipping had been a bit haphazard so she was easy to identify. She did have a decent...

    Combining nice and nasty hives!

I sort of did similar this year and it hasnt worked out so I agree with Finman's warning above. Here is a summary: Moved nasty main away and let all foragers return to empty box with some BIAS and comb. BIAS was in there to get them to focus on raising a queen. I then moved the nasty foragers...

    And today's daft mistake is...

Just came in from the garden apairy. Was opening the tab on a new queen cage which was in a made up NUC. Didn't have my knife so popped to the shed with her and the cage in my beesuit pocket. Dropped cage, the back comes off but I dont see it. Marching back i see the crash...big blue spot on...

    More Demaree queries....

It's the fashion you know... 1. Whats the best cycle time for a rolling switch of brood frames to empty frames between the boxes? Ive been doing a week...can it be longer? Or is it hive dependent - If so what are the indicators? 2. Im seeing honey / early nectar in the top frames. So far I've...

    Aggressive bees

I can normally tell after the inspection they first start the pings/attacks. If the guards continue to accost me on my local patrols, even without a second interloping into their home, I know its time for action stations.

First time Snelgrove attempt & inspection query ???

Just realised that you've not really had your query about the old queen and food in the top box answered. I just had 2 frames of stores in there. Good question as whether it makes sense to feed syrup to the top box.

    Aggressive bees

Is the stroppy hive subject the most topic the most popular topic on the forum? It seems so.... Friend of mine had the hive from hell. Gaffer taped wellies, double veils, three layers of gloves, proper Neil Armstrong set up. He moved it, completely fine. Later in the season, he wound up putting...
