Why do people use large beehives like national?

Tried poly and wood 14X12 and no different in anyway regarding overwintering, build up and honey production

Electric extractors are so much easier

What are you predicting for August?

No doubt it will rain in Wales but to what extent is in the hands of the gods but so far less than average. Extracted some supers yesterday and one was rammed with HB, never had it that this early. Supers back on this week and hope for the best. 🙏

Late Swarm to feed or not to feed

I would feed, if they don’t need it now it will come in handy for the winter. its amazing how quick swarms expand.

    Friendly breeds

I haven’t had chalk brood since I moved apiaries. It is at a lower altitude and warmer.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Bees don’t like giving up their hard work, mine were the same today but put on the long sleeve shirt and a base ball hat under my bee suit in hindsight as I noticed a few wasps about a few days ago

    End of flow signs/actions

Main crop with me is just starting so some boxes will come off for extraction and then returned. if you have a few supers on a hive and suddenly they are removed where are all those bees going to go, think they might get a little crowded. Mid September ill remove all the boxes just in time for...

    All full

Bit the bullet and ordered some supers frames and foundation, gutted I didn’t order when Maisemores had their sale a few weeks ago. The cheapest I could find with postage was Abelos. At least they can draw them out for next year

    Queen cell no swarm

Not sure what is going on there, 10 cells is a hive in swarm mode unless they are emergency QC. Happened to me years ago, found the queen crushed between two frames
  18. REDWOOD

    Quick question

    Did you see your queen
  19. REDWOOD

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Sorted out a spare BB that a swarm decided to move in to, now on a floor and filled the hive with frames and a crown board and roof fitted, good brood pattern and no sign of any nasties, I will have to move it though as it’s amongst my spare kit so I’ll do that in the winter
