    VARROA SENSITIVE HYGIENE

Are there any studies of the genetic basis of VSH? There has been sampling of managed hives in my region and they found some uncapping behaviour. How do you determine whether it's arisen due to a local genetic/selection event or it's due to interbreeding with a non-local queen's genetics? I'm...

    Ross Rounds?

Saw these and thought the min pani tartes wooden rings at 8, 10 or 12 cm diameter might be a plastic ring alternative. As ericbeaumont notes the raised notches to support the lid might be a challenge. Found them on the bakerybits website.

    Nonnettes de Dijon

I saw these in a French supermarket The recipe below looks straightforward technically but unusual in how you work out how much flour, butter, honey, marmalade etc. If you can make 1:1 and 2:1 syrup it should be a doddle🙃 http://www.farine-mc.com/2014/02/nonnettes-de-dijon.html One to try...

    Wax filtering.

You might need a greater volume of wax going through the filter. The initial liquid will still solidify but the following liquid should melt it and unclog the filter. That or start with your wax at a higher temperature, though there are downsides to this.

    Labelling jars

https://en.swienty.com/pi/Manual-label-dispenser_4003378_164734.aspx?CountryID=17&LanguageId=2&CurrencyId=11 I think I have seen homemade versions of these, possibly Hivemaker on here in the distant past. The description claims it works with hex jars.

    Labelling jars

Labelroo much prefers round jars, I have one and I don't think it would work with hexagonal jars. If you're handy you could make a label dispenser - Swienty make a stainless one (surprisingly £££££ though) you could use as a starting point.

    Honey on holiday

At a French ski resort, honey sold in solid blocks. 31€50 per kg with a large block on open display. Jarred honey at 17-18 € per 500g.

    Ross Rounds?

Avoiding single use plastics is a great idea but I'd like to see how a glass jar compares in terms of resource use. Is there a trustworthy comparison (life cycle assessment) between a honey glass jar and a comb honey plastic container? Some trading standards/EHOs look at whether you use new jars...

    Orchard planting

Fully agree about Ashmead's Kernel, they're a superb apple and I savoured the last one at the weekend. I grow Sunset and Fiesta as Cox alternatives but had more success with Kidds Orange Red. D'arcy Spice and a couple of russet types add some variety. I also don't bother with Bramley, easily...

    Does honey expand?

Sounds very much like fermentation. Are there small bubbles in the neck of each jar that weren't there when it was jarred? Does it smell alcoholic/not right? I've had OSR honey at 17% ferment, the best explanation that I've seen was that as the sugar crystallises out of solution, the liquid left...

You could calculate a weighted average though, surely useful to have alongside a range?

    Honey Wanted Bulk honey

Would be great if the survey results could include volume of sales when they give a price range. ie if 95% of bulk blossom honey was sold at £3.50 with 5% at £4 for example.

    Nicot History

I predict that in the late 1960s or early 1970s Monsieur Nico T was a semi commercial beekeeper who also worked in a plastics moulding firm and saw the need/possibilities of plastic hive components.

    Honey Creaming machines

Why soap? Add cold water, turn on paddle, leave for a couple of hours, drain and repeat as necessary.

    Nicot History

http://www.nicotplast.fr/presentationanglais/gbpagecadre.htm There's nothing much about their origins on the site, at least on the EN version. Shame they don't offer plastic national components (especially floors), I guess it's the consequences of a niche specification and not worth it.
