    Storm eunice

Spent Friday going from apiary to apiary. After intial blast had hives down of 2 sites. Put them upright and added concrete blocks to 2 tall NUCS. Early afternoon received a call from a farmer landlord he and a young worker had righted and reassembled a hive. 3pm I was out again. Hives had been...

    BeeTradex

Compak jars are not attending and Simon the Beekeeper is not currently on the exhibitors list. It is a real shame!! Although I am not intending to go if my plans for this weekend change then I would probably have gone with an elderly friend. I am not so sure now.

I think a number of issues are coming into play here. The viabily of taking a stand and transporting large amounts of equipment when there are transport issues. In particular I can imagine some very serious discussions amongst continental suppliers. Whether the show would go ahead this year if...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

My friend and I decided to cut grass etc in the main apiary today. Loaded the car with the tools and travelled the half mile to the site. Andrew loves to mow so he started with the mower. I had to cut down a nuisance elder shrub and some branches off an over hanging willow. Andrew continued to...

24/01/2022 Just checked this morning and very limited list of sellers. Several of the big boys not listed on the website. This has left me wondering Is the website up to date? Are some usual exhibitors holding back because of Covid issues in the UK and abroad? Are some of the exhibitors no...

    Which ones do you prefer

I have a mixture of Paynes and Maisies. I always try to paint them when new with 2 coats of masonry paint. If they are unpainted and dirty i wash them in bleach solution and then brush the exterior muck off. Folow up with 2 coats of masonry paint.

"Survivor bees" found in Blenheim Forest

My Brother brought me one back when he worked in Sweden. It was the best knife I ever had. I used it regularly particularly on the allotment. Then one day I could not find it and I have not seen it since. I really miss it as the blade had the most superb edge and could be easily honed.

    A beekeepers christmas day

I have a real dilemma this Christmas. I had a 30ft Christmas tree growing in the garden. I brought it home from a visit to Wales in 1981. It was 5 inches tall at the time. Every year it required more and more Christmas lights and taller and taller scaffolding towers to put them up. The lights...

    How to cut Kingspan?

I forgot to say yesterday I always use aluminium tape for the edges. I use 35mm insulation and cut strips to make a recess underneath. I then place fondant in the recess directly on the top bars.

    Poly usage

I have found Maisies polys to be robust. The walls on swienty supers are too thin IMHO I had a wooden hive blow over earlier this year. Roof broken so I will reclaim the top and build new sides. 1 super badly damaged. A few years ago a poly strapped together in my apiary dissappeared. I found it...
