    Foundation Roller?

This is a thermostatically controlled water tank kept at 45c to soften the wax tablets

    Foundation Roller?

I've made thousands of sheets of foundations using herring plates and a mangle, it's past time I upgraded to proper rollers. My plans took a dive when Peter Little (aka hivemaker) passed away as he was ever so generous with his time explaining the necessary processes, I have a series of photos...

Fondant's great for mini nucs, at mini nuc setting up time there's not enough hours in the day to do everything, even getting on the blower to order fondant, I have lots in stock for this reason, I imagine that's what Mark's up to too.

    Year one Queens

I like to think of a queen's useful life as measured in waves, each time she builds her nest is a wave ie. a queen mated in july 21 will have built up her nest once for winter and will be in her second wave now. Each season colonies typically go through three waves, spring, summer and autumn...

    Aficionados of oxalic sublimation

Ambient conditions will still have an effect even when the internal nest conditions are kept within the same limits wherever. Imagine a cloud of gaseous oxalic acid condensing on every surface within a hive, in a high humidity environment those crystals are going to soften and lose their...

    Aficionados of oxalic sublimation

My take home from the graphs was different, statistically there was very little difference between the oae and apivar- pretty much our most effective weapon in the armoury against varroa. Irritatingly they stopped the trial at 42 days, I've a feeling oae has more of an effect on fecundity than...

    30lb Plastic buckets

I use C Wynne Jones for this sort of thing, the 10l (30lb) buckets they currently supply have metal handles.

    Mini Plus Frames

Yup, many of them still in service, awful things which bend if you put any tension on the wire, as you say best set up from a cut out from elsewhere. They're still better than the next cab off the rank (the first wood frames they offered) which were just too tight for a beespace either side, at...

    Mini Plus Frames

I just bight the bullet and get the abelo ones, it does make me cry a bit spending so much of my hard earned money on little bits of wood that aren't that amazing though 😥

    Co-evolution of mites and bees.

They probably spread to more colonies if they breed so successfully their host collapses scattering the survivors.

Cost of beekeeping and poly nucs

If you did that we could prescribe langstroth only for everyone and outsource all the manufacture of bee equipment, also foreign labour to do the beekeeping would be cheaper, cheaper honey from abroad too, go the whole hog and abandon Britain altogether as a going concern and accept we're an...

Fondant or something else for queen rearing in mini nucs.

Fondant is just as good as that candypolene stuff, damp sugar or syrup can be used but personally I'd only go down that route if I've not got any Fondant. Syrup in the feeders of the mini plus hives as they've got a suitable feeder.

Latest snake-oil varroa treatment pretending not to be a varroa treatment

I watched that video and what struck me is that things are very different over there, clearly they were aiming at going into autumn with less than 1% mite loads, also unless I missed it while having a snooze they were only discussing oxalic acid administered by vape. I think things are so...

Cost of beekeeping and poly nucs

There's an elephant in the room, bs honeybees article in the latest beefarmer magazine explains the scarcity and lack of options or competition in the UK for eps molding factories, I think if a Chinese factory caught a whiff of the prices we pay for a poly box and the demand, surely tens of...

Man made v natural breeding and selection

I've always been envious of the smoker boy and the follower to put hives back together when he's done.
