This was not supposed to happen!

Though thinking again if you hived them on 17th only just enough time for a queen to develop. What did your hive them onto, was it drawn comb? Could there still be a couple of sealed QCs about?

Is there anything a hobbyist beekeeper can do about swarms?

I have this exact question. From what I’ve found - you can pretty much unite as soon as you’re sure the new Q is up to the mustard - so maybe 3 weeks. Someone may disagree.

    with a levered lid apparent?

This was not supposed to happen!

And when you say ‘the remains of several queen cells’ what do you mean?

This was not supposed to happen!

Sounds like something happened to the original queen and they are trying to raise a new one. If you don’t see the queen knowing whether or not you saw eggs can help.

You'll need a robust constitution for this

I was bitten by a shark in Tioman (off Malaysia) 5 years ago. (True story, though it was small one). The guy stitching up my calf didn't inspire confidence when he told me, mid procedure, he normally only dealt with hornet attacks. I asked him to get his boss!

    Site for a hive?

I've 3 long hives in the garden - surrounded by a willow fedge. 4th year - they are a joy to me. So long as the kids are old enough to obey a warning to keep a distance perhaps give it a go. You'll wnat gentle bees though - and that's a whole other can of worms. Sounds like you've an alternate...

    Treatment Free doesn't work

But why would sparing mites with lower fecundity prevent a boom. Wouldn't removing as many as possible should be at least as effective? Where does the pressure to spare the maladapted mites come from?

    Hello

Hi there, You'll generally get good advice here. Regards Neil

But for natural selection to work wouldnt there need to be some intra-generational advantge to the bees to do this - we cant just talk about lomg term benefits. A bit like nature never invented the wheel - there aren't enough advantagous intermediary steps.

But you said.. I'm not misrepresenting you, it's there in the quote above, which I rasied, amongst others, at your request. I accept you cant substantiate it, and probably you just mispoke - but why refuse to talk to me further over that, we all do it. Ho-hum.

    Nurse Bee Activity

I think I've read that contrary to the idea of the busy bee a lot of them do spend a lot of time just hanging aroiund - almost in a semi coma. But no I dont think they become foragers just becuase they have no hive duties; it seems the changes thorugh the various duties are related to...

Yes lets get back to that. General hive ecosytem, beyond pure gentic bee phenotype, is a reall interesting idea. But does bees selecting for low fecundity in mites as a form of reistant behaviour seem like a reach? How can they tell? Are there any other example in nature of annimals practicing...

    1) but as you said no one has disgareed with you - you dont need to tell us about your correspondence. 2) As a fact - some feral bees thrive would seem like a very hard thing to disprove - but what's your point. 3) No one is arguing with you. I suppose my only point would be: if extinction...
