What did you do in the Apiary today?

19C Saturday. United two Apideas: one Q+, other Q- using aerosol spray. Moved the Q- one into Apidea super . All OK this am but raining heavily

    Over wintering an apedia

Yes: do it regularly. Lessons from bitter experience. 1. Protect from wing/rain etc with insulated roof and side covers. 2. Double box gives lot more success than one. Not enough bees with one in cold weather. 3. Feed fondant above top bars under a clear polythene flexible sheet as a CB Fondant...

    Fondant v syrup

Experience is good - if relevant. Here ivy flowers late - October or November - so it is rarely harvested as bees are not flying much.

    Harvest

I spread my extractions out over three sessions: Spring in June early July, early August. Makes super handling much easier, gets honey to market far in advance of my local competitors- a KEY advantage - and reduces strain on my back. Usually I become competent by the time of the third...

    Fondant v syrup

I have ants in almost all my feeders but don't observe them eating larvae - but then I don't do many inspections after June so WDIK?

    Organic varroa treatments

"Experienced beekeeper" includes the category of "doing the same thing every year with mediocre results" which apparently includes many people writing articles for beekeeping magazines.. Matchsticks anyone?

    Organic varroa treatments

Anything without a list if ingredients is 1. Illegal 2. Utter garbage. Anything that claims to kill 100% of varroa is breaking the Trade Descriptions Act. Anyone who sells the stuff makes Arthur Daley look very honest.

    Fondant v syrup

I overwinter mini nucs on fondant alone.. If a small colony can do it without coloured fondant , so can a big one.. Don't feed small nucs with liquid feed now due to risks of robbing.. 200 bees cannot defend well against 250+ wasps Even bigger colonies can succumb. Underfloor entrances help...

    Apivar stopping queens laying?

I never inspect after July - except for mini nucs - so have no idea.

    Rejected eggs

Bees will eat eggs when starving.

Is it time to harvest the honey in the UK?

Just 30 miles away in Stoke on Trent. Have extracted all honey by second week August - roughly 0.25tonnes - and sold most of it.. Anti varroa treatment on and hives prepared for winter - which from the forecasts starts next week :devilish:

Too late to salvage weak nuc?

Yes: I still do.. BUT... and this is the KEY point.. these are colonies established long before with Eggs, brood, stores, and Drawn Foundation. To expect a colony to be started from scratch NOW - is hoping for good weather for two months to allow them to get established. AND freedom from wasp...

    Robing pressure on mini nucs

one very small entrance hole.Combine q- with q+ mni nucs using air freshener (for speed and convenience it is unbeatable). A combined nuc has more workers and is stronger and better able to resist robbing, Feed fondant only.. not syrup . Syrup attracts robbing. Despite above, still get robbing.
