Build A Beehive From Scratch - National Hive Complete Build (Youtube Video)

Nice build - if you have the time and the workshop facilities. If I was going to spend that much time making a hive from scratch then I would be making it in Cedar rather than pine but ... if I costed in my time and the electricity along with the materials I suspect that it would be...

    Bee suits

Lots of threads on bee suits .. sadly, there are loads of different opinions and in the end it's what works for you .. the better quality you can buy (in many respects) the better the protection from stings. I have the Old Castle Farm hives jackets Sentinel Pro - they have gone up a bit in...

    National Honey Show, who’s going?

It was a good day .. listened to three excellent lectures, caught up with a good few people I knew and some I didn't .. Resisted the temptation to spend £165 on a really nice solar wax melter on the Abelo stand ...mind you ... I think if I had one this summer it would have spent most of it's...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Closed up the weaker hive I was worried about - completely devoid of bees - no dead ones on the floor just a small patch of capped brood left. The frames of stores had been robbed out - but they had stores when I looked in a week ago and at that stage there were no eggs or uncapped brood - not...

    National Honey Show, who’s going?

There will be a sign on the table that says 'Beekeeping Forum' .. if you are there - come and make yourself known. I'm the ageing, balding, overweight one with glasses and grey hair !

    Your streamlining tips?

I got this far: "Good ventilation – full entrances, crownboard feed holes open". And decided it was not worth reading any further ....

    Your streamlining tips?

Only inspect those frames that need inspecting .. if there are frames of stores bypass them .. inspect brood frames only for BIAS, disease and queen cells - don't waste time looking for a queen unless there is no BIAS or queen cells. Stop inspecting when you have found out what you need to...

    Orange pollen in October

Very likely - they are right next to my apiary but the weather when they were flowering was abysmal.

    Orange pollen in October

Even my thornless cultivated blackberries were rubbish this year.. small, hard and even the birds were not that interested in them. They are usually big and juicy and knock spots off the average bramble - really disapponting.

North Korea joins invasion of Europe's' biggest honey producer

I hope not Goran, I was in your country in August1968 when the former USSR decided to invade Czeckoslovakia - in those days it was Yugoslavia and TIto was President - he was no fan of the USSR and they considered him as too benovent. We were in the South near Split when we heard the news and...

    Wintering bees in the U.K.

Bill Bielby (a great Yorkshire beekeeper) said in his book 'Home Honey Production' in 1972 : "the best way to overwinter bees is to make the hives as draught free as possible'. He also said 'there is no such thing as too much insulation'. Regardless of any other considerations for ensuring...

Hello, new member from Berkshire UK

Welcome ... one bee sting inside the veil is bad enough - five is definitely a lesson you won't forget ! Stings on hands and arms are commonplace and you tend to get used to them .. stings to the soft parts of the face are really not nice. A couple of antihistamines and application of...

North Korea joins invasion of Europe's' biggest honey producer

I suspect that the continual flow of body bags back to Russian mothers is slowly having a detrimental effect on Putin's Russia - it's over 70,000 Russian dead and even in a Russian population of 145 million it must be noticeable. If North Korea has sent 13,000 troops to assist then it's 13,000...

    Instantvap

In my primary school (also built in the 1800's (1878 - finally closed 1981 - still there but it's a business centre) the boys open air urinals were in a back to back block with the girls toilets and divided from them by a 6 foot wall ... and the game was .... you can guess ! And I'm in here -...

You see firewood - I see lots of sycamore bowl blanks just waiting for the lathe ...it's a very bland wood but what it lacks in natural colour it makes up for in the way that it accepts stains and acrylic colours ...
