    Right advice

A fellow beekeeping friend is convinced one of his colonies is Q- and wants to unite with a Q+ colony. Personally I think it’s too late to do this. I have normally united Sept time or during the active season is for some reason a colony goes Q-. Thoughts please?

    Fondant into syrup

Good Evening Folks, Does anyone use left over fondant for thin syrup in the Spring? I tried last year but the syrup even melted with water tended to solidify making it difficult to manage.

    Langstroth to National

Brain picking time for options. As well as my own hives, which are Nationals, I also look after two hives for a friend which are on a private site. These hives are Langstroth poliy hives. He can only have two hives on site which I can foresee may be an issue during swarming season. My friend...

    Ideas Please

I have inherited a 14x12 hive which has been very productive this year. The rest of my hives are Nationals and I would like to get the bees in a National hive next year if poss. What’s the best way and best time to do this please? Andy

Am I right to be suspicious?

To cut a long story short, A friend of mine who I help because of health reasons, decided that one of his colonies had become queenless. To rectify this he purchased a queen from a reputable source. This was in August. Unfortunately in the meantime the colony that was due to be re queened was...

    Under or over

I guess there will be divided opinions regarding this but when overwintering using a super of honey is the consensus that the super should be placed above or below the brood box and your reasons why please? Thanks Andy

    Best way forward?

Rightly or wrongly I have put a queen excluder between the two supers being used as brood boxes so at least I have a starter for ten to know which box the queen is in. If I can find the queen I think the issue is easy to resolve.

    Best way forward?

Forgot to mention, lots of bees but the queen is unmarked which doesn’t make life easy.

    Best way forward?

I am currently assisting a friend who is not too well. One of his hives, a National, has been extremely productive this year but he is using two supers as the brood box which makes things a little difficult. They tend to be using the upper supper more than the lower super with the queen choosing...

    What have I just seen?

A few weeks ago I posted a thread about a swarm that had taken up residence in some supers. The swarm covered two super frames and I placed them in a nuc box that I had close by together with some drawn foundation. Within an hour or so I noticed a fairly large un marked queen walking at the side...

    Queen introduction

Thanks Jenkinsbrynmair, I am aware of the technical terminology, it was my failed attempt at humour! I have had a colony before that just refused to make emergency cells even after two attempts at giving them eggs and brood but alas it didn't and I ended up uniting it with a Q+ colony. Normally...
