A fellow beekeeping friend is convinced one of his colonies is Q- and wants to unite with a Q+ colony. Personally I think it’s too late to do this. I have normally united Sept time or during the active season is for some reason a colony goes Q-. Thoughts please?

Good Evening Folks, Does anyone use left over fondant for thin syrup in the Spring? I tried last year but the syrup even melted with water tended to solidify making it difficult to manage.

I have inherited a 14x12 hive which has been very productive this year. The rest of my hives are Nationals and I would like to get the bees in a National hive next year if poss. What’s the best way and best time to do this please? Andy

I guess there will be divided opinions regarding this but when overwintering using a super of honey is the consensus that the super should be placed above or below the brood box and your reasons why please? Thanks Andy

Rightly or wrongly I have put a queen excluder between the two supers being used as brood boxes so at least I have a starter for ten to know which box the queen is in. If I can find the queen I think the issue is easy to resolve.

Forgot to mention, lots of bees but the queen is unmarked which doesn’t make life easy.

Thanks Jenkinsbrynmair, I am aware of the technical terminology, it was my failed attempt at humour! I have had a colony before that just refused to make emergency cells even after two attempts at giving them eggs and brood but alas it didn't and I ended up uniting it with a Q+ colony. Normally...
