    University Project Needs Honey Samples

There is an article in the Education Guardian today by Andrew Mourant called Follow the Bees. I cant find it on the internet. The University Of Wales are asking for your honey samples to be sent to Jenny Hawkins Welsh School Of Pharmacy, Redwood Building, King Edward VII Avenue, Cardiff, CF10...

Thanks Mr Bick I may well take you up on that. It will be nice to meet you. Fascinating the idea of uncovering a regional bee keeping practice! :)

    Wedges for Restacking Nationals

I was just wondering what other members use as wedges or methods they have for restacking boxes. I have just got some window wedges but I have not got round to trying them yet. At the moment I tend to put the box on at 45 degrees and slowly push it round but everything tends to move out of...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

There seemed to be more water under my veil today than in the local swimming pool I went to later. And the water was not caused by Rain! I inspected my nasty colony and found very young larvae and stores and room to grow but was sweating too much to pay respects to HM. These bees even seen to...

    Queen introduction advice?

Cor blimey I just read David Cramps chapter on this this morning! I may be doing the same; at least I thought I had a queenless hive, ordered a queen and then things fired up again. I could regurgitate everything I have learned but if you are like me you probably look to this site for people...

    Mentor Wanted Twickenham

I did classes 3 years ago and go to my local club where I helped look after colonies for 2 years. I have kept my own bees for 2 years. I am finding it hard when I come to manage things for the first time on my own. I read the books and watch the forums. When I get down to the Apiary I seem to...

    Advice please on swarmed colonies

Please tell me what does AS'd mean? My hive swarmed too last Monday. There are 6 capped queen cells and I was wondering what to do. I forgot about the propensity to swarm again. I must say the hive is looking pretty empty. One cell has definitely neatly opened. Any ideas?

Bailey Comb Change I tried to find the queen to move her up as I am in the middle of a bailey comb change. Got stung and gave up. Every thing is going like train.

    Woodpeckers

Idea to deter wood pecker There are several wood peckers around here. They have not attacked yet but I understand once they learn they always go back. I am trying out bird net draped over the hives which I found in my shed. I am assuming that this is not a surface they will think to land on. I...

    wax moths

I spotted a larvae on the edge of the box yesterday I presume it had been turfed out. Will the bees keep strong over winter to keep doing this?

    A couple of behaviour puzzles

Last night about 100 drones were crowding round the back of the hive as if this was their drone zone. I took a photo which I will try and post once my phone is charged. On the other hive a couple of thousand bees have taken to nestling under the mesh floor. I have tried taking them away with...
