Very interesting, is the jar covered normally, I'm guessing it is.

I have a book on obs hives.

Seems the Victorians had all sorts of obs hives and the bell jar was very popular.
They used straw covers like skeps.

The book says that the bottom of the jars were cut off but with the newer demi-john jars (as in wine making) are a lot thicker and difficult to cut.
The jars are then placed on a plinth so the bees can get in under the bottom rim.
Most of them were indoors but could also be outside....
They were an amusement thing...........

Now we watch Eastenders.

Journalistic cr*p as usual?

First it says 20k bees and then it suggests there could have been a shortage of bees. Just a little conflict between the two!

Well there were, after they died off!
