What is this rip off, why are nuc prices spiraling out of control ? so much for the “try and get people into beekeeping” only if their prepared to pay 220 quid and 500+ on hives and suits.

There is of course more than one type of hive and as pointed out by others PPE prices vary as does the quality and provenance of bees. Caveat emptor certainly applies.

Niv - that’s a great deal for newbies and guarantees support. I now belong to both my local associations and both are friendly and helpful. When I had some problems and asked for help, I found a mentor through the assoc and it’s kept me in beekeeping when I was thinking I would give up.

Shame I'm so far away, I''ve just united two colonies because I had too many, you could have had one for nothing. But then that might be the case more local to you because surely someone has caught a swarm they don't want. Hives and suits are a different matter, my hives have always cost about three hundred quid (for what I want: floor, roof, frames, supers etc.) and a bee suit is what you want to pay -- buy cheap, get stung, buy expensive, still get stung but it will last longer. Buy really expensive and you'll only get stung on the hands -- but you will get stung, it's what they do.

Now if you REALLY want to get stung, buy a car off eBay (I have not done this but I know people who have...ouch!).

Anything can be considered a "rip off" if you don't feel you've had your monies worth. I'm waiting to hear why the OP feels the price is unreasonable.
If he saw what I spent on test queens each year, I think his eyes would water!
