I know I'm potentially leaving myself wide open to derision and accusations of numtyness, but apart from top v bottom beespace and lug length, are there any other major differences between national and commercial supers ?

No, they are basically the same square footprint, so are compatible.
Some people use National broods and Commercial supers, as the supers are a little bit larger. Others use Commercial broods and National supers as the supers are a little bit lighter and easier the carry!

Commercial supers are taller, and the combs being wider (because the lugs are shorter) that makes the boxes heavier (when full) than national supers. Too heavy for some folks liking. So they just use national supers on top of their commercial brood boxes.

/// And AFAIK commercials are supposed to normally be bottom bee space … (like standard nationals, so no problem using national supers with them!)
