i have had a quick read up on making it but i would like some experienced folks views on making it and what recipes you prefer, i only want to make a small amount for myself just to keep my walking boots in decent condition, so i do not want to be spending a fortune on other products if possible.
Thanks.
Steve.

My favourite method consists of melting beeswax in a container surrounded by hot water. Doing the same to a well mixed (important) tin of neatsfoot oil and then combining the two with plenty of stirring. Does wonders for my Maxwells!

Be careful with neatsfoot oil, it can rot some types of stitching.

Just supplied some to the Army, for their Parade Boots!

First I've heard about it rotting stitching, I treat all my dogs collars and the stitching is fine.
To make a dubbin for your boots, I'd do a 2-1 mix of wax and oil.

Pure neatsfoot dissolved the bees wax from hemp stitching, thus the frequent references to "rotting the stitching". If there is stitching in your boots, it will probably be synthetic.
There is very little pure neatsfoot to be had today, despite what the adverts say! Get a can of neatsfoot from a reputable manufacturer i.e. Carr, Day and Martin, it will have additives (this is why it must be well mixed before use), which make it superior to the original and more suitable for modern leather.
You can add lanolin and a little pure tallow with the beeswax if you wish.

You may still be interested! I got a container yesterday of "Classic Neatsfoot oil", "Lincoln " brand. It seems to be very good quality and I shall be adding a little beeswax to some of it.
