    Overwintering,double brood or not?

My one colony grew very quickly,so I put on a second brood box(National hive)earlier this year. Should I leave it like that overwinter,or will enough bees die off so I return to a single box. Just coming to the end of my first year of beekeeping, this forum has been so useful. Thanks.

    Another Maqs question.

I have my bees on a double brood box, with one super on. I read on another thread that the Maqs strips should be put on whilst the super is in place. Should I extract my last honey before treating?Does the strip taint in any way? Thanks.

    Hornet traps.

What is the best thing to put in a hornet trap please? Last year we used jam & vinegar for wasp traps, can I use the same?

    First Artificial Swarm.

Did a hive inspection yesterday,6 days after the last one(work rota)and found lots of queen cells. Spoke to my mentor who advised doing an artificial swarm asap. We managed to blag time off duty this afternoon, thank goodness we did! Bees all over the front and side of hives. Managed to do the...

    Still nothing in my super.

I have a good colony who overwintered well.On the advice of my bee mentor,I put on a second broodbox(national)with undrawn foundation on 31st March. We are surrounded by OSR, so put on a super two weeks later. We inspected today, all looking good, brood, stores and HM,but still nothing happening in...

    Queen cell identification.

Somewhere on the forum is a leaflet from the Scottish Beekeepers, identifying different queen cells. I want to print it,but now can`t find it:hairpull: Can anyone point me in the right direction please. :thanks:

Possibly a daft question, but need to know!

I am working on a double brood national. The top broodbox isn`t completely drawn out,but the OSR is in flower, and I don`t want to miss out. Can I put a super on,or do I have to wait, and possible miss out. This is my first spring season.

    Double Brood,How To?

I got my colony of bees last July, and they have overwintered in a National Brood Box.They have had some fondant, but I see that they are now bringing in pollen. The lady who I did a lot of practical work with last year has told me to put on another brood box, when I do my first inspection. What...

    Dead bees.

Did a visual check on my hive this afternoon, and noticed lots of dead bees on the ground below it. The hive sounded noisy as usual, and a very quick lift of the roof, showed lots of busy bees. This is my first season, bees have been well fed, whats gone wrong?

    Yesterdays Inspection.

We took the opportunity of yesterday`s sunshine to check the bees, and to start feeding. The hive was very verybusy,we`ve never seen so many bees in the hive.they seemed happy, and we saw HM,but we noticed that lots of the bees have whitish/grey patches on their back,no idea what it could be. The...

    Timing of Feeding.

On Saturday we are up to week 4 of Apiguard. On Sunday we go away for a week. Can I start feeding syrup before we go away,or should I wait until we come home again? Being a very new beek,I haven`t got a clue how fast the syrup is used. I have a 4pt rapid feeder.

    Super on top or underneath?

I have read on various threads that some people overwinter their hives with the super underneath the broodbox. What is the advantage? I have had my colony for a couple of months, and have just done my second varroa treatment(apigaurd). Looking ahead to feeding, then wondering which way to go with...

    Frame parts.

I have just been sorting out the pile of frame parts I was given when I bought my hives. Typically, lots of them are not the right size for my nationals. The frame tops that I have measure about 17 " and the Hoffmann sides, around 10",what hive could they be for? I also have plenty of Mannly...
