Honey yield from 1 national super

Figures have been quoted on here a few times and all seem to be more than I ever get which is an average of 15lbs. I always return the wet combs to the hives so nothing is wasted.

God I love growing our own

I incubated my broad beans on the windowsill at home until the tips of the roots emerged and planted them out on the allotment the day before yesterday. When using a dibber, as usual, it often entered a 'void' = rodent sub-surface tunnels. Over 15 years on the site I have found short-tailed...

What's flowering as forage in your area

Euphorbia has been in flower a few weeks - they last ages! The commonest insects within the flowers are ordinary-looking flies - I can't think of any other similar pairing. Presumably the flies are after pollen and ?nectar. For the last few days bees are also visiting.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

    Gosh, where are you?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Nadired my supers. I over-wintered with brood & half and fed syrup in September and added fondant late January. The hives still heft fairly heavy and there are still some capped stores in the supers which are likely be a mixture of ivy/syrup/fondant - hence the need to nadir in the hope that...

    No bee suit?

I was taught beekeeping in 1972 at Sparsholt Agricultural College by John Cossburn**, County Bee Officer for Hampshire. Theory alternated weekly with building our own hive (Jumbo Langstroth) in the woodworking shop. Come spring in the college apiary we were allowed bee suits but not gloves -...

    No bee suit?

Reminds me of the famous tennis photo of 1976 because sometime in the 1970-80s Beecraft's front cover featured the rear view of a young lady in a miniskirt, but no bee suit, bent over an open hive. Always wish I'd kept that edition. Anyone got it? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennis_Girl

No need to be so reticent LG. We'd all benefit from hearing in detail how you deal with hive robbers:smash:

I can't find reference to that spelling of sarcopenia - a term only proposed in 1989 according to Wiki. The condition with either spelling is not mentioned in NHS list of medical terms. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarcopenia BTW: congrats and amazement on your climbing to that height.

God I love growing our own

Just to be cheerful: it's likely to get worse - it's that sarcopenia - I can't kneel now unless I have a spade handy to dig in to pull myself up on.:( I marvel watching children leaping from the ground without a thought. Took it for granted at that age......

    7 Beehives Stolen Llandudno

I wonder there's a regional variation in these crimes? I've not heard of rustling in Suffolk but I remember posting a pic of my honey sales box a few years ago whereupon JBM replied saying, in his neck of the woods, not only the honey but the boxes, poles and drainpipe through the hedge would...

    tentative sign of spring?

Lucky you! When we moved to this village 23 years ago there was frogspawn in every field pond - but none for many years. We had occasional hedgehogs and grass snakes in the garden - again none for years. What has happened? - there has been no major visible change in the village...

Leg jiggling: is it a male-only phenomenon? An observational study in an airport café.

Thanks for these interesting reports. Just for the record, I've had dermatillomania since teenage. It probably fits in somewhere on the spectrum of behaviours mentioned above. https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/conditions/skin-picking-disorder/

What did you do in the Apiary today?

First day of spring in the apiary today (sunny, 12C, no wind) judging by the frenetic activity of the bees and the satisfyingly loud hum. Masses of bright yellow pollen entering 5/6 hives - maybe willow (tho' goat willow not out yet) or Mahonia from neighbouring gardens? Sixth hive equally busy...

Sounds as though you have personal experience so please tell us more. We didn't observe that phenomenon in our study but would consider a video as an add-on.......;)🦵
