What did you do in the 'workshop' today

(Like almost everything these days) It's made in China, so safety isn't major concern :D There's a light shield around the laser module though and it only clears the workpiece by a couple of millimetres so light leakage isn't too bad. I've made a deep enclosure for the unit so that it isn't...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

I have, yes, and it certainly does help. I've read suggestions however that some of the commercially-available air assist systems really don't move enough air even so. I saw one person who had connected up their compressor and was feeding air at 20 psi to the laser unit. I just need more...

    Cars hate me

In the end I settled on spire nuts that I can clip over the existing rivet holes and then use M6 bolts with a flanged head to retain the liner. They arrived today, so that's probably a job for tomorrow. James

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

It cuts 5.5mm hardwood ply quite easily. That's as thick as I've tried so far. I'm told by someone who has done a bit more experimentation that it will cut 18mm solid softwood too, and even the likes of solid 18mm oak or walnut if you take a couple of passes at it. The tricky bit is balancing...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

They're actually box joints rather than dovetails, but yes, it was all laser-cut. The charring is actually quite light and would respond well to a few passes with some fine sandpaper, but isn't a problem for gluing apparently. I can also adjust the design to allow a bit more for the kerf of...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Another quick test on scrap this evening. This is getting closer to what I actually bought the laser to do... James

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

I'm still playing with my new toy. Today I made... A bee-ring! :D James

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

That's exactly what it is. It has a 20W laser though, which means it can cut fairly thick wood though in some cases it will need two passes. James

This is (eventually) going to do some stuff that's beekeeping related, honest. Sooner rather than later if I am to ensure that "her indoors" keeps her hair on. For now however, I am still learning how it works and getting it set up nicely... It seems to be going pretty well so far, despite...

What's flowering as forage in your area

I'm not sure they're making bucketloads, especially when you think about how much energy prices (and others) have gone up over the last few years. Not that I've ever been in one. James

    Another hobby development

And by coincidence, I was invited to dinner on the ship with the (last, I'm fairly sure) captain of the QE2 when it was docked Southampton in the late 90s once. I was his son's best man :D Lovely chap. As was the groom's grandad, who was in fact the first captain of the QE2. James

    Cars hate me

New door lock in. All of half an hour's work once the door is open, even with what's supposed to be the tricky bit of reconnecting the bowden cable that operates the door release when the outside handle is used. Now I need to find some short self-tapping screws that I can use to fasten the...

What's flowering as forage in your area

Happy days... Used to visit Wisley when we lived near Wokingham. Even once met Rachel de Thame there completely unexpectedly, not long after she'd started doing television I think. These days Rosemoor is closer and an enjoyable visit, but it's a bit of a slog to get to. James

My wife had Juniors' Choice on at Christmas and they played that. Must be the first time I've heard it in years. Still makes me laugh. I think it was his macaroons she swooned at (nearly) though. James

    Foundation making

Hmmm. I wonder if I could laser cut it? :D James

    Foundation making

Raises hand. Under 60 and not only know what a mangle is and its original purpose, but even have one, stuffed in the back of the workshop somewhere :D Sadly it had been rather savagely attacked by woodworm by the time it came into my possession, but I live in hope of making it functional once...
