    Standard Nationals or 14×12

Hi all, This is more directed to those who have a substantial amount of national hives. Just wondered what your thoughts were on the size of the standard brood boxes, do you think they're adequate in size or, if you were to start over again, would you go with the 14×12's? I'm increasing rapidly...

    Laying workers

what's the best way to unite a queenless hive with laying workers. Would a converted crown board work after a couple days? Or is it best to get rid of the laying workers altogether so there is no risk of the queen being killed. Cheers.

    Spacing in national supers

How many frames should you get in national supers using wide plastic ends? I have always used narrow ends, tip to tip you get 11 frames in the super but using the wide ends in the same way I can only get 8 frames in. Is this right? It seems a big gap in between each frame. The frames are drawn...

Hi all, I have honey stored in a tank just wondered if its best to jar up all of it and gently warm it when required for sale or is it best to leave it in the tank and jar it as I go. Will it crystallize in the tank? It’s not OSR honey. Thanks

    Queen Rearing

Hi All, I was going to try and raise a couple of queens, using two brood boxes. The original brood box Q/excluder two supers then another Q/excluder and the second brood box on top of that. If the bees produce a couple of queen cells would this encourage the original brood box at the bottom to...

    Eggs in a super

Hi all, Did an inspection before noticed that one of our supers had a patch of newly laid eggs in one of the frames in the centre. They have only just started to use the super, and there is plenty of room in the brood box. The queen isn’t the largest I have seen and wasn’t present in the...

    Missing Queen

Hi all, I was recently inspecting my hive to see if the virgin queen has been mated and to check that she is laying. I was surprised to see a queen cell on one of the frames, as I was trying to catch the queen to mark her, she suddenly flew off. I have inspected the have since and there’s no...

    Uniting colonies

Hi all, I have united a nuc with one of my queenless colonies by using the paper method above two supers. The bees have only just started drawing the foundation out in the supers. I have put the 5 frame nuc with a laying queen in a spare brood box and placed this on top of the supers with the...
