    More Space?

After jumping the gun with an AS early June I inadvertently ended up with a walk away split. Fortunately, new Queen emerged mid June and as of today there are 7 frames BIAS. Earliest I expect new bees to start emerging is around 22nd July. They’ve got 2 1/2 frames undrawn foundation in the...

    AS Advice

They didn’t use eggs for the cells. There we’re definitely no eggs in the hive last week, and there is now only sealed brood.

    Good to know. Thanks

Went to reduce the 2 ECQs I’d left down to 1 today. Found another 6 ECQs all on a different frame, all sealed. It was the first frame in the box, and there were definitely no EQCs on this frame last week. This is day 14 without a Queen. I wasn’t expecting to see any new ECQs - should I...

    Warning Signs?

Thanks for the plant, netting, hive painting and bow saw alternative suggestions. Some good ideas, and appreciate you sharing them.

    Warning Signs?

By camouflaging them I just mean I don’t want them to be easily visible from a public vantage point. I don’t think is unusual? Maybe just the wording that I’ve used ?

    Warning Signs?

That was my thinking tbh but was just interested to see if there any different views.

    Thanks - that’s a great idea

    Warning Signs?

So is your thinking that if they are not visible, there should be a warning?

    Warning Signs?

Hadn’t looked at it from perspective of people getting too close before realising they are there. You’d be aware they were there from about 10 metres away - so you wouldn’t be right up close before you realised they were there. Definitely something to think about from when looking at keeping...

    Warning Signs?

Sounds like best bet is to ensure they stay hidden, and not sign post them. Can anyone suggest any simple camouflage techniques? Behind overgrown trees and brambles at the moment, but at some point cover will be gone.

    Warning Signs?

I did wonder if signs would draw attention. Field is owned by a family member and I know their views on trespassing, so no concerns around them wanting me to move bees if someone was stung. Field is currently overgrown and hives were located so that they are not easily visible. I’m clearing at...

    Warning Signs?

Hi All, I keep my bees in a private field, no right of way through field and access via a padlocked gate. The hives are in a fenced off area (stock proof fencing) within the field, and you need to go through another gate to get to them. I don’t have any warning signs, as the other people...

The QR colony was totally gone - the hive was empty.

Thanks All. I’ll go back next week and just leave the best looking cell. I’m going to go look up Wally Shaw.

    AS Advice

Well unfortunately being too quick off the mark attempting an AS has resulted in the bees doing exactly what I was trying to prevent! Had a look yesterday and the QR colony has gone - obviously didn’t want to be subjected to anymore of my beekeeping skills 🙄 On a positive note, the QL side...

    AS Advice

Thanks for the feedback. So, I was too quick to AS, and should have waited for more established cells before doing anything. I’ll remember that for next time. My intention was not to make them panic! Hadn’t thought about using additional QCs to raise a spare queen, so something for me to...

    AS Advice

Hi All, I’ve recently started beekeeping again after a break of a few years (couldn’t juggle work, small kids and bees) and I’d appreciate some AS advice. I purchased a Nuc from a local beekeeper at the end of March, and I’ve watched the bees building up. When I inspected last Saturday I...

Cast swarm - how long after queen emerges?

Hi All, I did an AS a couple of weeks back. There were 2 sealed QCs on Saturday 6th August - so the latest the new queens would emerge was Saturday 13th August. Yesterday (7 days after the latest I would have expected the queens to emerge), just as I arrived at the field where I keep my bees...
