Good points polyhive. Perhaps I should add that my tangential extractor was slightly off true on the top bearing which resulted in a permanent wobble. Gentle extraction was not easy.

extracting Manleys Because the face of the comb in a Manley frame is not in contact with the cage of the extractor there must be an increased risk of the comb collapsing, especially in newly drawn frames. It's certainly a consideration when weighing up the pros and cons of different types of...

    Gentlemen prefer blondes

Three blondes were all applying for the last available position on the Texas Highway Patrol. The detective conducting the interview looked at the three of them and said, "So y'all want to be cops, huh?" The blondes all nodded. The detective got up, opened a file drawer and pulled out...

    The vanishing coin

A dad is in a restaurant with his son. The young man is demonstrating how he can catch a pound coin with his mouth after flipping it in the air. Suddenly he starts choking, going blue in the face. The dad realizes he has swallowed the coin and starts panicking, shouting for help. A well...

    The Nun's tale

A cabbie picks up a Nun. She gets into the cab, and notices that the VERY handsome cab driver won't stop staring at her. She asks him why he is staring. He replies: "I have a question to ask you but I don't want to offend you." She answers, "My son, you cannot offend me. When...

    Scotland the Brave

An Englishman is being shown around a Scottish hospital. At the end of his visit, he is shown into a ward with a number of patients who show no obvious signs of injury. He goes to examine the first man he sees, and the man proclaims: Fair fa' yer honest, sonsie face, Great chieftain e'...

    Frame types

When I used Manley frames I found they had one serious drawback..If you have a tangential extractor the face of the comb does not come into contact with the mesh of the extractor because the side bars act as a spacer. The result is the comb collapses against the mesh. If you use a radial...

I clean them up with a hive tool then go over them with a blowtorch. It's a tedious job -I find a glass of cider near to my right elbow helps

I ventured on to the adults only section for the first time yesterday. I thought some of the jokes were so good I spent a couple of hours last night sending them to my friends. Keep them coming

Is this forum a bottomless carbage bin

When you started beekeeping Finman, did you not ask questions of other, more experienced beekeepers that they might have considered garbage; but perhaps they were too polite to say so?

    Queen clipping

I use to clip my queens - a diagonal cut taking off about one third of one wing and sometimes the very tip of the other. Queens don't take kindly to being chased with a pair of scissors. Some years ago a professional beekeeper told me that you can make the queen quiet by putting her in the...

R.O.B Manley 'Bee keeping in Britain'

I have read a number of Manley's books. Obviously much has changed since they were written but there is also an awful lot which is still relevant today. My vans get serviced by Harry Wickens nephew. He's got some good anecdotes about bee keeping exploits by his uncle when he was a child

    Robing in December??

Polyannwood, I agree with Finman. Reduce your hive entrances to no more than 1 centimetre. I'm fascinated that your hives were flying - I have occasionally lost a roof during high winds, but I have never personally experienced a flying hive!

    Beefever!

I was introduced to beekeeping nearly 40 years ago by the village postman who kept a few hives in my dad's orchard. He warned me about bee fever, I can vouch that, like herpes, it lasts forever
