    2009 Plans

Hi Mike, Breeding queens in the UK/Northern Europe is not a NONO it is just impossible to produce them when everyone wants them ie early spring. I plan to choose my best behaved least swarmy colony, feed them hard in spring and induce them to make swarm queen cells. these cells can...

    Shooting

Welcome to the gun club Enzyme - I remember you submitting your certificate application!! I've got a bolt action single 410 - sorts out the local vermin - incl mods - a treat. Food for thought - you don't need two barrels if you are a good shot:) Happy hunting Mike

    Ferrets.

I've never kept ferrets but a number of years ago I had a major problem with rats in an old barn. Didn't want to use poison because of risk to other pets. Local gamekeeper gave me a plastic bag of ferret poo - it doesn't half stink - Rat problem solved they all legged it for pastures...

    Ventilation

I agree with all above. With an OMF any holes in the crown board/roof causes a chimney effect and pulls cold air up through the cluster - not good. Mike

Sorry for stating the obvious but strength of reaction is directly proportional to the time the sting is left in. Even after the sting has detached from the bee the venom sac continues to pump venom and the two barbed parts of the sting continue to work it in deeper. I always tell...

    2009 Plans

I was almost wiped out by winter 07/08 but managed to raise 3 nucs from my one surviving colony and have just put 4 strong well fed colonies to bed for the winter. Hopefully they will all get through the winter. My priority for 2009 is to make up at least 4 nucs to hold queens in reserve and to...
