    Captured first swarm!

"Well done it is nice when a plan comes together" Planning eh? Well to be honest it was more luck than planning, but it's the end result that matters and it's looking positive at the moment, just hope it continues that way. Pete

    Captured first swarm!

Quick update... Checked the swarm hive yesterday and there are now eggs and larvae visible!! So being chuffed at collecting my first swarm has just changed to euphoria at them deciding to stay and make there home alongside my other hive in the garden. Thanks for the advice all Pete

    Captured first swarm!

Good point! That now raises my next question? How do I tell if it's a prime or cast swarm? I have noticed that in my first year the learning curve has been more like a vertical line LOL! Pete

    Captured first swarm!

Hi All, I've been keeping bees for just over a year and I was called out last Sunday evening (10th) to collect a swarm! Now I've never done this before so said I'd be there in half an hour which gave me time to have a quick look in my dummies guide before I set off. A couple of hours later...

    Did the oxalic today

Done my single hive yesterday too. My first winter so a bit nervous, had a practice session with the syringe in the kitchen sink (water only) and then opened the hive to see plenty of bees and stores. Quite pleased to say the least as it's my first winter. Now planning on what to do for next...

    Smoker fuel?

I'm sure you can although I'm not too sure as to what's been added in the manufacturing process. I may experiment with different woods that I turn as some can be very fragrant. Eucalyptus has a very nice citronella smell. Pete

    Smoker fuel?

Good point, although in my defence I am in the very early stages of the marketing plan...i.e. Only just thought of it :p

    Smoker fuel?

Now there's a thought! I do a fair bit of woodturning as a hobby and have recently been making some ash plates and platters. My workshop is knee deep in ash shavings so all I need is a load of small plastic bags and 'Robert is your mother's brother'. :-) Pete

    Ltd Co or Self Employed

The flat rate scheme is very good for small ltd companies. The main drawback with the ltd route is the amount of paperwork needed. You also need the services of a chartered accountant to finalise the accounts. For my ltd company (main day job, very small company) the accountants bill is £950 a...

    5 frame nucs 2011

I can vouch for Essex Paul's bees. I bought a nuc from him in July and they have been very well behaved since their drive up to Norfolk. Have only been stung once and that was totally my fault. I would recommend them to anyone

    a book idea

Excellent idea but would be better online as it will be easier to keep up to date. As previously mentioned as soon as you print it it's out of date. Now where did I put my iPhone Application development book? Pete :cheers2:

    First Bees at last

Good luck Keith, I'm still trying to source my first colony. My nice new national hive is built and ready to go, so it's just a case of tracking a nuc down relatively close to home (Norfolk). Cheers Pete :cheers2:
