Urgent! Inspect immediately after a returned swarm?

Hi There, I would imagine your clipped queen is running around in the grass somewhere (unable to fly) - the swarm realised they were queenless and went back in. So my guess is you have a queenless colony. I would remove all but one QC and leave them to it.

What Do Foragers Do When They Can't Forage?

among other things, they'll be ripening honey on a rainy day! it's always a blessing when a rainy day comes after a long dry hot spell in the summer, I will always look the next day and see what's ready for extraction....being 9-5'er, I love a rainy Friday in the summer... Gary

    Opinions?

caution i am 5 years in to beekeeping now - first 3 years had bees in the garden, not a huge garden but all was ok for a while. Then one summer everything changed. dogs got stung, we couldn't go outside all summer, after inspection chasing me indoors and flinging themselves at the window. it...

Hi There - I have a beehaus and have done this successfully before. Yes find the old queen and remove. put newspaper in between the two colonies (my beehause central board has a small section of plastic which can be removed and then I stick newspaper over the gap and put the central board back...

Uniting after AS - keeping old Q as insurance?

If you just unite I'm afraid that they'll just be off again richard wow, that throws everything out of the window! re-uniting after an AS is common practice - so how comes? Gary

How long to wait, post-AS, before deciding they're Q-

Hi! Here's what I normally do (as a relative newbee). Once I have performed the AS, I check my handy Queen life-cycle chart (on google) showing each day and what the QC looks like in pictures. Then match what my QC looks like againt the pictures and count how many days until she will hatch...

Uniting after AS - keeping old Q as insurance?

Hi, an AS does just that - ie stop swarm surge, re-uniting together with the new queen, and plenty of room doesn't guarantee that they wont swarm again, but much less likely as the queen wont normally swarm in her first season (but again, no guarantees with beekeeping!) Re the second point...

Uniting after AS - keeping old Q as insurance?

Hi all, couldn't find any topics on this, so sorry if it's been asked before. I am about to re-unite after an AS (dont have space to increase). All checks made and new Q laying fine, worker brood etc. I will use the newspaper method and want to keep the new Q and get rid of the old Q...

    Hornets

could be wrong - but I think the Asian hornet has two rows of parallel black dots along it's back towards it's tail. Just like in the photo. The Euro hornet doesn't have these dots. Anyway, that's how I check. One flew into our lounge the other night and made a hell of a riot. dogs went...

    My dog smells awful

The world has gone mad.. Bees are now being trained to detect explosives and drugs on aircraft etc. Meanwhile the sniffer dogs are making sure the bees are ok.. Amazing!

    Feeding back and apiguard

Thanks everyone! So i might as well leave as is if im not going to harvest anymore, treat or varroa and then move the super under ready for the winter. Giving them more time to fill the super. Guess there's no rush with moving things about yet... Gary

    Feeding back and apiguard

Thanks everyone, really appreciate the advice. If i put the supers under the BB now, should there be a queen excluder between or a crown board with a small space? Or just as it is (ie super, then BB with nothing in between). Thanks again Gary

    Feeding back and apiguard

Hi all, just a quick question (well, 2 really) I have decided to feedback 5 super frames of honey back to the bees for winter stores, i will make a small space in the crownboard, place under the super and let them rob it onto the brood box. 1) how long will it take them to take it downstairs...

    Beehaus divider board bee tight?

Hi, my divider board seems to be bee-tight (it's the newer type one with the black pull out section for re-combining purposes). something worth checking - the legs can splay and create a gap where the leg bar meets the hive body. Check this on the empty side, as bee's may be getting in that...
