    National Honey Show, who’s going?

I've decided to go to my first NHS on Thursday. Interested in the AH talk and the workshop on swarming as at the moment I only seem to increase the number of hives!!! I can bring some empty 10kg ex food use tubs up which we use at work if anyone is interested foc.

    Next years forage

I find myself in the enviable? position of having an entire 600 acre arable farm being signed up to the Sustainable Farming Incentive and I am smack bang in the middle of it. I'm trying to find out what mix has been sown but I think it includes white and red clovers amongst others. Can anyone...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Oh gosh. Sounds like you were in the right place at the right time. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Fingers crossed for you.

    Asparagus beetle

It's a shame the season is so short though. Although, by mid June I've almost had my fill - a month later it seems so long until the new season!

    Asparagus beetle

I haven't any flower yet but I've seen them on it in the past. A lovely deep orange pollen I think?

    Asparagus beetle

Has anyone else had a real battle with the beetle this year? If so, is there a secret to dealing with them? I've been going around every evening and squashing them but there's always more the next day! I'm assuming the commercial growers must apply an insecticide - pyrethrin?

    Propolis

Thank you - that made me look up corbicula as well! Every day is a learning day.:)

    Propolis

Realised I don't know how the bees collect propolis? I saw some really oily looking propolis coloured pollen baskets on some bees today during inspections and wondered!

    Demaree and 14x12s

Thanks. That make sense. I have looked in bbb and all looked well last week but couldn’t face lifting it off again especially as just hurt my back in a non beekeeping incident!!!

    Demaree and 14x12s

I’m beginning to see why 14x12 is not ideal for demaree. The top box has now all emerged and last week they were back filling with nectar. What do folk do now? I would like to get the top box gone as it’s getting too heavy to lift. Would it be quicker to move the top box down above bottom...

What would you do? One for our novice beekeepers

Ok, so we've nuc'ed the Queen and left her in the apiary to bleed off the flyers. What happens to the single sealed QC in the double brood? I'm wondering that because we've taken the Q away there is a good chance they might make more QC's? Or are they so far down the supercedure lane that you...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

It looks like they are £9.50 each from thornes. So I’ll get a couple as I’m bound to lose one somewhere! Thanks both for advice.

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Well I managed to break the wooden ring on mine with the wire mesh. I had been looking for a good thread one but couldn’t find. Anyone have a favourite and where from?

    Bee Fly

That's brilliant! I saw one the other day and couldn't work out what it was never having seen one.

    Asian Hornets...

Lots of traps being distributed around here (West Kent) I'm afraid. My bait stations will be going out this weekend as its the first decent bit of weather we've had this year. It would be good to hear from those putting out traps whether they have any by catch and if they catch an Asian Hornet.

    AsianHornet education aid

    Thanks and noted.

    AsianHornet education aid

Bait stations ready and going out this weekend maybe? Not the most attractive but at least I can keep an eye on it through the kitchen window! I'm trying to source the most relevant poster for the general public as I have a lot of walkers passing my house at the weekends and I thought with a...

    Asian Hornet APP

I fully agree with you on this process and it is how I'm going to proceed. What confused me is this statement from Karol who has been my guiding light so far on how we tackle AH but it sort of flies in the face of his previous guidance? Oh ......... hang on! I just read and re read this sentence...

    Asian Hornet APP

So.... we should be using velutina traps not bait stations??? Or does that apply only early in the season when it's only going to be Queens trapped?
