Poly Nuc box full of honey?

Good advice, thank you. I collected the swarm from a neighbour‘s garden and I only had a poly nuc available. They are now in a National hive of 11 frames and I am hoping next time I inspect them I will find a laying queen. Please can you suggest how long I should leave it before my next inspection?

Poly Nuc box full of honey?

Maybe. I was following the advice of a video posted by the Norfolk Honey Company.

Poly Nuc box full of honey?

I am hoping there is a queen there somewhere but I could not find her. I agree, the frames have probably been filled with a good honey flow plus the feeding syrup. There is no brood at all and the frames are so full of stores there is no room for any unless they free up some space. Maybe I...

Poly Nuc box full of honey?

I collected a big swarm in a six frame polystyrene Nuc box 12 days ago. The frames were new with new foundation. I placed the Nuc in my garden and fed the bees with syrup to help them draw out the comb. They took all the syrup in two days so I topped it up again but then I went on holiday for a...

    Varroa treatment in March

Thanks everyone for your great advice. As a result of your comments I have decided to avoid putting ApiLife Var into any of my hives this month. I think it may linger in the hives even after the treatment has finished and could taint the Spring honey. I did varroa treatments last September and...

    Varroa treatment in March

I have just been watching a Youtube video by Simon the Beekeeper recommending what hive activity should be done in March. It is a very informative video but one of things he recommends is doing a three week Varroa treatment using ApiLife Var in March before putting on the Supers. I have not done...

    Newbie from Worcester

Hi Simon, I have bog standard British National hives. I am a relatively new bee keeper and learning from my mistakes all the time. I am happy to share my experiences with you and show you my setup when the COVID restrictions are lifted. However, I don’t know how to send you a private message...

When should I switch from feeding syrup to fondant?

Great advice. Thanks you for your replies. I have never hefted a hive, I’ll give it a try.

When should I switch from feeding syrup to fondant?

I have three hives and since extracting my honey Supers in August and completing my varroa treatments I have fed my bees with Ambrosia syrup for the last month. They have taken it well but have now slowed down. Is now the time to stop feeding syrup and replace it with fondant for the rest of...

Honey extraction process: Request for advice.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Your advice is very helpful. It is a single brood box and I would prefer to keep it that way so after a couple of days I now plan to remove the three supers and leave the bees to sort themselves out in the brood box.

Honey extraction process: Request for advice.

This week I have extracted honey from three full Supers on my British National hive. While the Supers were off the hive for extraction I put an empty Super on the hive in their place to give the bees some space. Today I have put the three extracted Supers back on the hive for the bees to clean...

How do I combine colonies from different kinds of hive into one?

Thanks. I’m all set now. I’ll let you know how I get on.

How do I combine colonies from different kinds of hive into one?

Thank you. Great advice. I can easily cobble together a floor and a roof. As I haven’t got a spare brood box, do you think I would get away with using two empty supers and placing them on top of each other?

How do I combine colonies from different kinds of hive into one?

I was wondering. I don’t have a spare brood box but I do have a few spare supers. What if I put two supers, one on top of the other, then put the brood frames from the poly nuc into it then filled it up with frames of foundation, then placed the whole lot on top of the queenless brood box...
